@lep, first welcome to CCF. Second, while I don't disagree that this isn't a real 1799 US Dollar, can you please share whether it is attracted to a magnet and what the weight is? Thx.

to the CCF Question: Why would you buy a valuable coin without checking it out first. All you have to do is compare yours against the picture of a genuine coin to see that it is not close. That is a four figure coin if genuine, hope you didn't pay near that for it. |

Hope you didn't pay a lot for it definitely is a fake hopefully you can get your money back best thing to do when you are buying a coin like this is to get one already graded they fake these so bad.

Thanks all for your help, I'm really grateful that so many of you responded. The coin is attracted to magnets and weighs 17.6g, so confirms it's a pretty bad fake as well. I did pay 500$ for a set of coins which all unfortunately were fake. So am pretty disappointed. The bad thing is I can't even return them, it was on fb marketplace which is sketchy in its nature. I guess it's just a very expensive lesson for me I was thinking of maybe selling them on ebay for maybe 5$ each explicitly stating they're counterfeit (there are 30 coins) to recoup some of my loss. Do you think this would be good or would it attract the wrong crowd (i.e. people who might buy them to just con others) as if it's the latter I'd just not sell if you get me. |

You cannot sell them on ebay. It is against their policy to sell counterfeit or replica coins. Next time please do your homework before purchasing coins. Bobby beat me to it but the same answer Edited by JimmyD

I would keep them for examples of fakes so when you look at other coins you can compare the details so you don't have to go through that again. That's bad you can't get your money back. I wouldn't deal with Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, ebay is ok but you have to careful I would buy graded coins because there is good amount of fakes on there as well they list them as the real deal. That's unfortunate and as you stated, an expensive lesson. By all means, post your possible purchases here first before buying. You'll get quite k responses as you saw here. It's probably futile, but I would at least attempt to contact the seller, if they haven't disappeared already. They probably knew exactly what they were doing. If they know how to use FB marketplace, they know how to google the value of a coin like this. They would not have let it go so cheap in this day and age. If it's too good to be true......... File a police report. Make sure to use appropriate terms such as fraud, counterfeit, etc. If you can contact the seller via facebook, let them know you have filed a police report.

Very unfortunate indeed! I would go online to the ACEF site and file a report. Chances are that this vendor is doing this to others as well and hopefully will be caught. Problem is that these creeps change identities like everyone else changes underwear.
