Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. The last coins I received from the mint (Morgan/Peace dollars) all had that black lint inside the capsule. Not very attractive.

Quote: black lint inside the capsule I've not seen that. The static does attract it to the outside, every one I take out of the OGP needs a wipe with a lint free cloth. I do see several caps with dust and small white specks inside. Someone mentioned in another post that the Mint's clean room isn't very clean. I doubt if they even use clean rooms to assemble their products.

Quote: had that black lint inside the capsule. That seems to be an issue with the mints Morgan and Peace dollars this year. combined with the crappy packaging the flocking material adhering to the plastic coin tray. I would ONLY recommend canned air. but be sure to no shake it or tip it over so much that the propellent also sprays out. that could ruin the coin.

I've had lint in ASE capsules before, and as barkeep suggests, a careful blast with canned air usually takes care of it easily.

I leave the coin in one half of the lens and use a lens cleaning squeeze bulb. Little puffs an inch or so from the coin.

Phrases like Don't do It, Just a gentle cleaning, Black Lint Dust!!!!!
JOHN1, Well Said !!!!!!! No Coins New from the Mint should EVER be or Need, to be cleaned, EVER!!!! PS, Lint would not cause any long term problems, IMO.

I've used my wife'e hair dryer, not hot, to blow off lint etc. of coins. I once tried a Qtip to take a spec of dirt off a proof ASE, it put microscopic scratches on the coin, won't do that again.

Quote: No Coins New from the Mint should EVER be or Need, to be cleaned, EVER!!!! I would have agreed with you in the past. After receiving my 2021 dollars I have to disagree. I will be giving on of my 21Ds an acetone bath this weekend to attempt to clean grease off. Many of the dollars I received have lint or other particles in the plastic. As others suggested, use canned air. DON'T use a makeup brush or any other brush!

I read somewhere, maybe here on CCF that canned air is not recommended. John1

So I guess using a Brillo pad is a no-no? :)

I'm having trouble with the comments of "don't do it". These commemorative dollars are arriving with the black "velvetine" fibers on their surface. Some have grease smears. The presumption that these contaminants will never affect the surface of the coin is merely an unfounded guess. The mint itself removes contaminants and then uses robotic machines which pick up the coins puts them in the airtites and processes the packaging. The black fibers enter the capsules sometime after the final packaging, probably when rapid air pressure changes occur in the cargo hold of an airplane. Not removing the fibers, nor the grease spatter, is not a reasonable option for the future of an otherwise perfect coin. Even the TPG would remove these before slabbing them. So, I really can't wrap my head around these no-no comments.

Improperly means anything more than quick bursts or inverted so the super-cooled liquid propellant hits the coin.
