Nice job keeping stats. I like reading about the probabilities and seeing the comparisons from one type to another.

So tell us, has it been worth all the effort? Including lugging the coins back and forth to the bank?

I don't know. I just do coin collecting for the fun of it.

Looking just at the arbitrage from swapping out wheat cents worth on average 5 cents each with face value cents, and only including search time of 1 second per cent in terms of time investment, I think that this works out to about 40¢/hour. Does that sound about right?

Pretty much. You can't make a living at it.

I keep similar detailed records but in other aspects of the hobby. I think it is interesting, fun, and helps you make statistically better decisions.

You should keep customer wrapped and bank wrapped rolled coins in separate categories, so you can see what type gets you the best finds.

Virtually all of the coins I got from my old bank were custom wrapped. Most all of the coins I get from my new bank are machine wrapped and in boxes. There was one box of custom wrapped pennies I got recently. There weren't any wheat pennies in it at all. Machine wrapped rolls usually don't waver at all from the usual rate. You'll never find someone's Wheat penny collection in machine wrapped rolls.

Of all the wheat cents I've found in rolls--perhaps 2500 or so over the years--about 80% came from customer wrapped, the remaining 20% from bank/commercial coin service (Loomis, etc.) rolls.

Very cool that you have kept these stats, it's interesting to see the different numbers. With your Canadian finds, I'm assuming you are close to the border?

Very nice!

You may have noticed I edited your table. Use the

tags and it will preserve spaces and present everything in a monospaced font so it lines up correctly.

@josh, what was the year on that Liberty Head Nickel. Seems like you got someone's collection dump because no way those are still in circulation.

It is an 1895 Liberty head nickel.

Yes, I assume it has been kept in suspended animation; in a collection, on someone's closet shelf, or in a forgotten change pile. It wouldn't be here at all or at least no better than a complete cull if it were in constant circulation for 127 years.
