Lovely key date, we don't see many examples in this state. I'm in at MS62-MS64 range so I'll settle at MS63. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I considered buying this coin as I am currently looking for a gem 16-D with full bands but felt this one was overgraded. PCGS gave it MS65FB and sold for $47,200. I can live with an overgraded coin as long as it is priced correctly in my head, but this one wasn't. I can even live with an overgraded coin if it has outstanding eye appeal but this one did not have that.
The first issue is that this coin is weakly struck in liberty's hair, particularly to the right of the eye. It is also weakly struck in the corresponding area on the other side of the coin, by the lower diagonal band in the fascis.
The coin has very few marks but is bright white with many small oxidation spots throughout the obverse, giving it a dingy look. The axe head atop the fascis also looks dinged in several places.
The top and bottom sets of bands around the fascis look mushy. Although sharpness in those areas is not a requirement for full bands designation, I would prefer a sharper strike in all of the focal areas on this small coin.
To me it is not a particularly premium coin and certainly not gem in my book, so I decided to pass and keep looking. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this coin and glad that we were roughly on the same page on this one. As to my grade, I think it is MS63FB and not a premium coin within the grade, mainly due to the strike weakness.

Luster has been scuffed (wear), on the high points, more noticeable on the obverse Lack of design detail at these locations. leading edge of wing, and hair in front of Lib's ear. AU-58, not FSB.
I agree, not a gem coin, it has some strike weakness.

I don't think it is a gem either. But to be fair, a coin can be graded a gem and have a weak strike, so I see no issue there. This isn't an AU coin, the center bands being completely split are proof of that. Maybe this coin is proof the TPG's give key Dates a little leeway?

i agree. this coin is not 65. at those prices you would expect a much cleaner example. I would not grade the coin FB however PCGS only looks at the center band and this one is. when I personally look for FB I look for all three but thats just me.

Playing devils advocate: we are just seeing one angle of the coin through photos. Lighting and shadows may cause that subdued luster at the high points to look worse than they are. Fields are clean, free of any major marks. Basing off fields alone, MS65 isn't too far off. HOWEVER , I agree with NS, spots are a detractor, and I personally can't look past the subdued/breaks in luster at the high points (based on these images), so I'll stick by my MS63. I also go by all 3 sets of bands being split, so no FB in my book. Quote: This isn't an AU coin, the center bands being completely split are proof of that. The FS designation can still be attributed to coins in AU, typically uncommon in lower AU due to wear, but totally reasonable in AU55-58. I didn't word it how I was thinking it.
Comparing this fsb coin with au fsb coins is night and day difference.
There is zero wear and zero flattening.
This coin is super rounded on both sides.
The au fsb coins I've seen, you can visibly see the wear, there is a flatness on both sides.
It is very evident the coin is au, but they technically see a line down the middle to attribute it fsb.

Grading a coin the size of a fingernail from images the size of a dinner plate is always a problem.

I was way off on this one. I thought with the solid middle band the lower fascis would be fully struck. Apparently what I took as wear was a soft strike.

Weaker strike appearance and rubs on the reverse lower diagonal and horizontal band make this one a MS-62FB at best.
