Jedi,

I normally get one or two decent pre60 nickels per box. If you keep searching I'm sure you'll find some!!

Good luck to you.

Has anyone looked at the production figures of the 2009 nickels? It looks like that one might be way under produced.

They are at 70,000,000 after 3 months. That is a 280,000,000 run rate with 140m per mint. That is way down compared to prior years.

I would say this year the mint got in over their heads....there are so many coins and so many deadlines they are trying to meet. My thoughts are that the dimes/nickels are going to spike in production towards the later part of the year due to the six quarters, four pennies, four dollars that need to be produced on a deadline.

Here are the 2 best coins I found out of the 2 boxes I just searched. Happens to be that they are both from 1938.

meck19 Your two 1938 finds bring back some memories from the 70's when I got a 1938 in BU mint condition. Those are some great finds. My last box I got one 1966 and a 1964 in BU with full mint luster. There out there, thats for sure.

I have a question for the Jefferson roll searchers and I guess this would apply to any denomination of coins. When roll searching for older coins is it better to ask for coins that people have brought in versus bank or mint rolled coins? I assume mint rolled coins would just be the newly minted coins. What about bank rolled vs rolls that are brought in by people?

You are aware about that nickel on the left ... it's a 1938D and a sweet one at that. Looks to be a MS64 or 65
The other looks like it might be a large date over small date 1938 in XF/AU ish condition.
Take a closer look under a good 20x loupe.
That's a keeper 82D too!

As to answer motrbotr
which rolls are better to search. My opinion is that at any time in almost any roll a good nickel can be found. Bank tellers don't look at dates on Jefferson's.
Sometimes you'll get re-runs that have been searched and re-wrapped and taken back to the bank so maybe bank wrapped rolls are better in that way.
To a non collector the 38D looks the same as an 82D. It just looks like a nickel.
That's why I used to like searching nickels. norseman012 The good ones are still out there to be had but you have to look at a lot more of them and look at them all closely.
I agree back then there were a lot more pre 60's to be had but now there are more dates to look for too.

Hello Wheezy. I was stunned with the 38D. I instantly replaced my F-12 in my dansco album with that baby!
As for the loupe I don't have one that powerful. I'll have to keep it in a 2X2 and order one with my next purchase through Brent Krueger.

The 82D was a nice surprise.

Here 2 others that I found a while back before I had my new camera. What are your thoughts? Die polishing? I posted another 1940S that I found in the same box for comparison. Check out the bridge, neck and pony tail.

Motrbotr,

In my experience (8,500 bank rolls of nickels in the past 14 months) I feel that overall bank wrapped rolls are the best, and they are where I have had the most luck. That being said, the best individual ROLL I ever got was a customer roll. So, I think you can go either way with this. The 100 rolls I have to search through tonight are a mix of both.

To be honest, I can't tell without cheating and doing the same looking around the net as anyone could. Off the top of my head, I'd say weak strike and / or die polishing as well. Later die stage? Maybe well get somebody in here with that stuff more fresh in their head.
40 s weak strike is my guess.

I see neckless Jeffersons all the time, even among the more modern issues. Nickel dies take a pounding, and press operators will go extra lengths to squeeze every strike out of them that they can. Ever seen how bad late die strike modern nickels look?
