This style of "top ten" subject does come up from time to time, but mostly from the perspective of one's favorite purchases that particular year. Here are some links to stimulate discussion and inspire you:

important in some way to US History or to the evolution of the US Mint and coinage in general

Although there have been posts on this subject before, the coins that jump right out to me for US History AND history of the mints would be Morgan silver dollars! They're interesting and fun to collect and most but not all, are under $1,000 (depending upon Grade).

I adore my Morgans. Read up on them and see what you think.

@dsking Funny you say that. One of his items I asked him about was his GSA Hoard piece and he explained the whole story.

Now I really want a GSA slab as a bucket lister.

The ten "must own" US coins for me are the last ten coins purchased to complete my "core" Dansco albums.

I have bought seven of the ten and there are three holes left.

Have Bought (in order of purchase date)

1. (1877-S) Trade dollar for 7070
2. 1914-D Lincoln Wheat cent
3. 1913-S Variety 2 Buffalo nickel
4. (1847) Seated dollar for 7070
5. 1909-S Indian Head cent
6. (1869) Seated dollar with Motto for 7070
7. 1877 Indian Head cent

Need to get

8. 1922 "Plain" Lincoln Wheat cent
9. 1909-S VDB Lincoln Wheat cent
10. 1916-D Mercury dime

I know 9 & 10 press the "under $1000" requirement, but remember, these are going in Dansco albums. Anything I get is going to be on the cheap end. Nothing in 1~7 broke the $500 barrier.

Thanks for the thoughts. Lots of interesting coins to research on these lists.

Also I do realize that this price limitation limits buying a Saint Gaudens Double Eagle which is a personal bucket lister for me.

I also appreciate that there is some fellow love for the GSA Hoard out there. Really cool story to me and the holders just seem to look great in a collection. Plus with all the cleaned Morgan dollars out there it is nice to know you are for sure getting an original.

The 2 cent and 20 cent pieces also seem fun just for their oddity!

Dearborn and 52Raymo, those are beautiful deuces! I'm trying to photograph my uncirculated 1869, but it's so reflective that my pics do not do it justice. I tried, though.

Saint Gardens Double Eagles are wonderful for any collection. Definitely keep that on your bucket list.

As for Morgans...collecting the GSA Hoard would be fun! I never thought about limiting myself to those but, it makes sense to me!

I continued my collecting into the Peace dollars. It's a great way to keep going forward with the history of our dollar coins.

Most importantly...research and have fun collecting!
