Guess I'll be learning how to crack a USM coin capsule. .

I don't think these are sealed. Just need to find the seam. And something like a utility knife. To open

Would I be better off ordering another (while they are available) and sending the one I received back for a refund ? USM CSR said they do not do "replacements."

Yes, the TPC's take packaging debris into account and usually air dust them off before an official grading.

Correct. Fingernails can work, but a sharp utility blade is more efficient.

For eighty bucks, I shouldn't have to open the capsule to clean out junk acquired during the production & packaging of any proof coin or medal. . .

Will cross my fingers and hope the Peace proof and Liberty medal do not have similar issues.

Time to pack the truck for a camping trip.

Nothing screams poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape.

cptbilly, I open a capsule with a pocket knife, find the seam on the side, use the blade to gradually work around the capsule applying some pressure. Go all the way around. Mint capsules are pretty tight, don't force it open, go around several times if need be to finally free the two halves apart. I had some fiber debris inside my Peace dollar capsule. Try using a hair dryer, be careful not to damage the coin. If you have to touch the coin hold it on the edge, I use soft gloves too to prevent skin oil from getting on the coin. If the fiber won't blow away you may need to use a cotton swab to brush the debris off. I'd keep the coin if it's not damaged. If it is damaged you could send it back within 7 days. Check the Mint rules for returns.

I had this problem with a few of the Uncs I received. I just carefully opened the capsule with my fingernails blew the debris off. I agree that we should not have to do this, but if that is the only problem with the coin, I am ok.

I had a similar issue has cptbilly. There was a small piece of red thread on the inside of the capsule on either side of one of the coins. I carefully opened with my fingernails. The threads stuck to the capsules and I brushed them off. The capsule did seem harder to open then with the 2021's.

I ordered an additional Morgan. . .it was in good shape, less some black packaging fibers inside the capsule. . .and a red plastic strip on the outside of the capsule.

Sent the first one back for a refund. USM sent a pre-paid return label for UPS service and I dropped it off at the UPS access point yesterday afternoon. We'll see how long it takes for the refund to register on my CC.

I'll cross my fingers the SF Mint does a better job on the two coin RevPrf set releasing in November. . .

Thanks for the suggestions and comments.
