I'd guess mid-AU as well. Maybe as low as AU53 but certainly nowhere near a MS63 coin. Best case scenario is it grades AU58 imo. I'd call it AU55 if it were mine. There is no reason to have this coin graded. It's a (relatively) common-date, circulated and clearly genuine. It would have to be MS for me to consider TPG. Still a nice old gold piece though!

Quote: thinking about submitting this for grading Why so...? Could understand the idea of preserving/encapsulating her or authenticating her...but beyond that... Why? Nice (authentic) (see above comments) AU coin...enjoy her in your own air-tite. Thanks for sharing! smat

Quote: Why so.? My father owned the coin and it was formerly graded by ICG at MS-63. His hope was to "one day" get it crossed over but never got the chance. PCGS has a population of around 200 or so in the 60 or higher and he always wanted to see if he could get it in that range. I look at the certifications of other 1879-S in PCGS and they don't look as nice as this one. Here's a MS-62: https://d1htnxwo4o0jhw.cloudfront.n...75792477.jpgI also didn't want to send it and have it come back "cleaned" which would be devastating to me.

Put it in a hard plastic case and forget about the grading service.

The PCGS 62 looks nicer than the OP's coin.

Quote: His hope was to "one day" get it crossed over but never got the chance. Well...it's up to you now... Maybe just to satisfy that curiosity...? If you submit this coin...do you have others that will also be submitted? I only ask because, submitting just one coin can be pretty expensive. If this "is" the only one...you could find a LCS and ask if you could piggyback with one of their submissions and just pay your fair share instead of buying a membership... Thanks again for sharing and let us know what you decide to do. smat

MS62 straight grade. I see some light contact marks from handling but not much sign of actual circulation.
I'm by no means proficient in grading gold coins, I just call 'em like I see 'em.

ANACS would settle the matter - with shipping both ways and fee its worth the 50 bucks and you might very well get an MS grade? Any $500 + pre 1933 gold sells and trades much faster in a slab.

AU-58 but any old gold is worth slabbing for proof of authenticity.
