Nice type 1's!

I like coins from the lost year of 1975!

Even nice chBU's are kindda tough for the Philly issue. As minted about 65% were nice chBU's in mint sets but the years have been brutal to this coin. Not only were huge number of this date destroyed for their parts but many of the dollars just went into circulation. Rolls are very elusive and tend to be quite bad. If this weren't bad enough the '75 mint set packaging is among the least stable of all dates. It cracks, peels, and tarnishes the coins and now thewy are virtually all affected. Then the kicker; this date is tougher to clean up than most. Nice BU coins are elusive. There are no rolls, and the mint sets that aren't already toast are often tarnished and can't be remediated.

MS-64's aren't scarce but this is little consolation if you can't find one.

In 1975 MS-65's were very tough. Now there's not much real choice except to buy one in a slab. It probably took about 1000 sets to find a Gem in 1975 but today it might take more sets than can be purchased at bid!!! You'll still get a few 64's at bid but, of course, it's a huge amount of work.

You are right on 1975 mint sets, cladking. Very tough to find decent Ikes in them and the Denver coin is usually the better of the two. The type 1 reverse struck up well in the S mint proofs, where it was two strikes to the coin.

I love Type 1 proofs, CN and silver clad.

I have avoided Philly Ikes exactly for the same reason you imply, JBuck. Poorly struck. I just collect S and D mint ones.
