Looks to me like they each are holding either a banana or an onion. Looks like it was taken on a relaxing Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
I still think about those WW2 soldiers and how tough most of them had it. I went thru basic training myself in 1969 and some of my drill sergeants at Ft Campbell Kentucky were WW2 vets just getting in their 30 years so they could retire.
Thanks for posting!

Thanks for posting, triggersmob. My father's uncle went off to war in 1914. He went out on a skirmish one night and didn't return. His name is on the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, one of 6000 Australian soldiers who have no known grave.
In Flanders Fields BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields
The Ox moves slowly, but the Earth is patient.

This is from the Commonwealth War Graves site.
