Hello crab_eater
Sorry for late replay as I have been away
From my research 1995-2000 baby medallions are sterling silver (92.5% silver) and 2001-2010 baby medallions are 99.9% silver - both weigh 43 grams
The silver baby medallions were only released as part of 1995-2010 RAM Baby Proof sets
There has never been any indication from RAM that a 29 gram baby medallion was included in the Baby Proof Set nor was there any indication that any RAM Baby Proof Sets from 1995-2010 were anything but silver
Can you post pics of both the silver medallion and the 29 gram non-silver medallion side by side?
I would be curious to see the non-silver version
Thanks

Here ya go mrcruise, one on the left is 99.9 % silver ,one on the right is 66 % copper plus nickel and more. The silver medallion looks white whereas the copper medallion looks grey. Same @43mm . Just got a refund from Roxbury's (Imperial Coins) for the 2008 Baby Proof set with the Cupronickel medallion that they sent out to me after I won the ebay auction. I told them that it should be silver and was not happy with it. They happily agreed to refund me no dramas.

Thanks for posting pics - I have never seen a thin version of the medallion - I would guess that whoever replaced it relied on the fact that most people do not pull the medallion out of the case to examine it Happy to hear you received a refund

Still the fact that some of these proof sets have a cupronickel medallion instead of a silver one is perplexing. I really do not think that people are replacing the silver medallion . Instead that the RAM has . Has someone actually faked the medallion? I do not think that someone would or could be bothered to do that. I will put an information request about this directly to RAM ,and maybe you can too , to solve this scam. This needs to be recognised or disputed with RAM responses to this question.

Here is a link to an ebay seller who I bought 4 medallions from, this listing is still for the Proof set medallions but the 29 gram ones. This seller sold me the 43 gram medallions that were also for sale in another listing. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3349508...of+medallion

I am seeing many of the following items for sale on ebayhttps://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185703819349https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/395919540699Some sellers list it as silver - other do not The sleeve with these items do not indicate they are silver which at the very least suggest they may be the source of the non-silver medallions It does not take much to lean towards the notion that someone bought a heap of these and substituted them with the original silver RAM medallions For the record this is pure speculation

I have not seen those listings before mrcruise. I sent both sellers a message as to the weight of the medallion/medal/token. Both replied , one said 7.5 grams the other seller said 8 grams. Guess they are from uncirculated sets? Not the 29 gram ones that appear occasionally in the proof sets. I sent a query to the RAM about the different medallions and this is their reply. Quote: Thank you for contacting the Royal Australian Mint and season's greetings to you too!
In answer to your query, the Mint is unable to confirm production errors or provide information regarding the rarity or value of any coins.
For further insights, we recommend contacting a coin dealer who offers valuations, grading service or a coin collector club or community who may be able to provide more information.
Thank you for interest and ongoing support of the Royal Australian Mint.
Kind regards,

Crazy Is it possible to "antique" a coin post mint as well as to "gild" and "colour" it? Did Perth Mint issue "antiqued" Kookaburra 1oz coins in 2018 and 2019?

Quote:Did Perth Mint issue "antiqued" Kookaburra 1oz coins in 2018 and 2019? According to AI ... 'The standard 2018 1 oz Australian Kookaburra silver coin was issued with a Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) finish. The Perth Mint did not issue an official 1 oz antique finish version of this specific coin as part of its standard release program, though a third-party German mint did create an altered version.''A private mint in Germany created an altered version of the 1 oz 2018 Kookaburra coin with a special finish. This coin has an antique finish and was also colored as part of an "Around the World" series. It is not legal tender because it was altered by a third party not related to The Perth Mint after original production. This altered version has a very limited mintage of 500 pieces.' https://www.google.com/search?sca_e...Uq2g&csuir=1

Quote: Are these genuine coins? Are they in your book mrcruise? In response to MachinMachinMan Aftermarket Private releases are generally not included in my book for several reasons: 1. Information is hard to come by (unless you buy one and reference the certificate included) 2. Generally not advertised and pics are hard to come by (I made a special effort to include images of all coins in book) 3. No way to confirm metal content - you either have to believe what is on certificate or measure with metal analyser which I do not have Are these genuine coins? They are genuine in the sense that they exist but they are definitely not official releases and are altered by gilding, antiquing or colouring and thus any information on these coins in their accompanying certificates must be taken on good faith Having said that I do cover a small fraction of these Aftermarket Private releases in the book that I was able to access and photograph due to the kindness of some of my coin collector friends who loaned them to me These include the 1999 Silver Kangaroo with Y2K privy, 2000-2002 & 2008-2009 Silver Kangaroo coloured coins (the 2000 & 2001 coloured silver coins were actually sold by Downies), the 2008 Silver Koala with F12 privy, various W16 privy silver coins from 2015-2018 and the 2015 Funnel-Web Spider Skull privy coins (I've included some pics of these for reference) As others have answered since your post these Aftermarket Private releases generally are from Europe, namely Germany and all based on the original bullion coins issued by Perth Mint which they used to create Aftermarket versions as the Perth Mint did not mint antique versions of these coins, nor the gilded or coloured versions of several other Aftermarket Private releases. Hope this helps

Thanks for your replies coaster & mrcruise. I wonder if the people who buy these altered coins think they are genuine Perth Mint varieties.
