I don't know. It was in a small collection of my father's, who often metal detected.

I've seen people overlay pictures to prove mintmark locations but I don't know how to do that. Anybody on this forum that can overlay the OP's picture with a picture of a real 16-D Merc?

I would try to raise the mint mark. There are a couple of threads here that have successfully raised the dates on silver coins. Get an eye dropper for the raise the date liquid and tilt the coin so the liquid drains off the coin and pat dry.

Here's a comparison of Festus's coin to the 1916-D Mercury dime MS65 from PCGS's website

Severe environmental damage. The coin is a goner and will never come back.

E-Z-Est and a Q-Tip worked for me in the past. Make sure to rinse with clean water after.

Seriously interesting. So throwing the image into GIMP, zooming to 800%, and running a High Pass filter over it kind of makes it look like someone purposefully altered the source image.

Just my opinion but how those pixels became so uniform in color is suspect, especially when they take the shape of a D.

I don't see a mintmark. In hand, try using glare against the surfaces so you can see the metal texture in that area, whether you can see a definite mintmark or not.

The photo wasn't altered, it's a genuine picture of a coin I have... anyways here is another picture after soaking it in acetone.

I see what you're hoping is a D but it's not oriented/positioned correctly. I suspect it's just a random blob of corrosion/toning/gunk.

No, no D. Unfortunately just a really gnarly 16.
