you may have some dirt/grime imbedded on both sides especially on the profile and bust. i'd give acetone a try. would not hurt
unless the coin is pitted in those areas G4 straight

G-4 is a safe bet with the reverse weakness. It will most likely straight grade.

I went ahead and soaked it in acetone along with a soak in Verdicare. Definitively removed gunk from the surfaces and out of the tiny nooks and crannies on Liberty. Does the obverse surface just look like centuries of abuse or do you think from these pics possibly some corrosion going on at some point? Lighting was a little brighter on this set of pics and closer to how it looks in hand.    |

good photos adam. tough call on corrosion. to me it looks ok based on the photos. I think the gunk has been stuck in those marks, scratches for a long time. i'd try one more acetone soak for a little longer. this was a pretty good result for a first shot at it.

It does appear lightly corroded, but still betting it will straight grade.

It is a nice piece and would probably straight gray. I would not attempt any more work on this coin at all.

Worn surfaces both on devices and fields appear to be a little rough.
I am only guessing if I give a reason for this.
Others may have a better reason than my non reason.

it came out great Adam. I'm not seeing anything that would warrant a details grade just an old circulated example. there is a gauge under the left wing however that would probably pass due to grade and age of the coin

Well it's bloody hot here today. So stayed inside and attributed coins and came back to this one. The 1805 50C varieties are easy to distinguish based on the position of star 7 and the date size and orientation. Landed on O-107 as a match to the obverse and continued on to see if there were any other matches to this obverse. The last, O-114 was also a match.
This was the only variety that had some commentary stating: 1) it is the rarest of all early halves, 2) only two are known to exist, 3) that 114 shared the 107 obverse, where the "5" was punched with that for a quarter, hence its noticeably small size, and 4) the 114 reverse has four berries on the olive branch.
Oh snap, no such luck #9785;#65039;! Still R.5. I read a post where the BHNC estimated between 48-65 survivors for the 107.
Anyway, just thought I'd share. Adam
