if these are your photos maybe give us some shots with less light. the luster could be camouflaged here due to glare. I see some longacre doubling in some of the letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the L in LIBERTY

AU58 or MS63. I'm leaning MS side. would reassess if new photos are presented

not sure whats going on in front of the forehead

I'll say MS-63 as well, but not a high confidence factor.

Photos show dull luster making the coin look AU-55. Maybe new photos with more lighting will show the surfaces better.

I didn't have sunlight to work with last night. I will take some fresh photos this morning or after lunch.

Whatever is in front of the forehead, it is on the die, not the coin. My guess is a die clash remnant or die clash polishing, since it appears in the same two places (before the forehead, and behind the nape) on many Mercury dimes. Other examples of that same place on different mint state coins:

That area is right where the leaves and branches land in a die clash.

Took some pictures in indirect sunlight at angles to show luster and surfaces.

Is that hairlines on the face, neck and wing?

MS details, cleaned is my guess.

I'm assuming this coin is not in a holder. if thats true then looking at the area between the red lines appears to have been wiped with something to leave hairlines. this does not happen naturally as they re too elongated. not sure this would pass

UNC details (lightly polished)

MS straight, see no indication of a clean. Coloration on R by United looks completely natural to me.

For some reason they look raised to me - like the scratches are in the die.

DOCC just for future reference. the only way you are going to see hairlines like this is from die polishing. you will never see die polishing across the face of devices. add to that, that if they were die polish lines we cannot see any on the fields where they would be

you're entitled to your opinion, just wanted to point out that this would not be on the die
