Let's save a picture of the coin edge, as this is an important clue.

My coffee hasn't kicked in yet. Does that say COPY?

Does it say COPY on the edge? To me, it looks like pitting and cracking from a poor casting.

Hard to say whether it's COPY or casting flaws. It certainly looks like pot metal instead of copper.

Fake Massachusetts cents are a plague on ebay, you can find at least one every time you look.

Both my copy and the ebay coin have a grey metal core covered with a thin brown layer. You can see the grey metal core showing through at the high points on the ebay coin.

Is the thin brown layer just an artificial chemical patina?

Yes, it is some sort of brown wash to imitate a copper coin.
