The most recent AMBPR has this more accurately listed as an R-5! Not often do the rarities increase. Good find!!

Many R-5 and higher die marriages, including this one, can be recognized by the obv/rev mis-matched die states. You see the stars are pulled to the rim indicating a later die state, and the reverse is very sharp, an early die state. So for anyone that cares to share, is there a particular source that is the gold standard for evaluating rarity? Or does it depend on the series?

I think NGC gave it XF-45 since it was unattributed. Nice find!

For Capped Bust half dollars, it is the semi-annual Auction and Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars 1794-1839 (AMBPR) composed by Steve Herrman. He looks at every auction house and studies die states, putting a lot of hard work into this price guide. You can email him and purchase a copy. NGC graded this coin a AU-53. I agree with most everyone here that it is likely overgraded and closer to an AU-50. I was considering crossing it to PCGS with an AU-50 minimum, but will probably hold off a little while.  |

I tried crossing this to PCGS with a recent batch of coins with a minimum grade of AU-50. It didn't cross. I can't tell if they are thinking details or XF.
