When you see flow lines such as on your nickel, that is caused by Die Deterioration. It is not an error but part of the minting process.

The numismatic term is PLANCHET. A Planchette is used with an Ouija board.

yeah... that pair of dies was used, abused, put away wet, and brought out to slave away the next day and the next day and the next day, until they had the decency to crack up and be put out of their misery.
