This one is absolutely brutal. This PCGS attributed MS67+ Full Bands Mercury dime (cert #37520742) is top pop for 1942-S 10¢ Inverted S Mintmark FS-501. One teeny tiny problem: the coin has an ordinary Trumpet Tail mint mark. It isn't even a Serif S, let alone a rare inverted Serif S. As listed, one would assume a $1500+ valuation on that coin, maybe more because it's too pop for a registry set coin. Real value is maybe a fifth of that amount or less. https://www.pcgs.com/cert/37520742

Brandmeister, just goes to show you that even the TPG's screw up from time to time.

This thread certainly reinforces the need to educate yourself when purchasing coins vs putting 100% trust in the label. Great thread

Quote:Just don't look too closely at the mint mark down through ERICA. Looks like it was scraped by a Coin Wrapping Machine.

Plate coin for 1954-D Jefferson nickel, Full Steps. PCGS MS66+FS, estimated value $8000-9000. An ordinary MS66+ 1954-D nickel sells for $200-300. Ignoring that I cannot believe this nickel is graded MS66+, I think it is an amazing stretch to declare it Full Steps and increase the value 30-40x. https://www.pcgs.com/cert/45841563
