I guess I'll circle back to this. Platforms like ebay are rife with counterfeits, fraud, and scams, but the problem isn't limited to numismatics. They have the exact same problem with trading cards, designer purses, watches, jewelry, etc. One difference though is that ebay has started a program to guarantee authenticity in several selling categories by requiring sellers of high priced items to ship to an authenticator. Once the authenticator confirms that the item is genuine and described correctly, they ship it to the buyer, and any further interaction is between the buyer and ebay. If it's determined not genuine, it's sent back to the seller and the transaction is cancelled. I see that as a potential way to limit the number of high priced fakes that make it to uninformed buyers. They aren't doing this with coins yet, but it might be easiest to start by requiring this process on sales of TPG-graded coins over a certain dollar amount. It shouldn't be too hard to confirm authenticity of a coin that's already been authenticated. Obviously, it wouldn't help with the huge number of raw, counterfeit coins out there, so buyer education and caveat emptor is still the rule.

Fraud and stopping it I think is the point of your overly wordy post. I assume you recently had a bad experience or as some would call it a learning experience.

Consumer education of yourself or others is more valuable than venting when it comes to buying items.

I would appear you are posting this same thing in other coin collecting forums. So not sure if you are just trolling to stir the pot across the boards or actually think this is the way to succeed in whatever your goal is.

Good luck on your journey.

Thank you for your comments.
I'm only two message boards in and this is not so much about stirring the pot but honestly is a plea for help.

Thankfully I have not been burned recently, and although I have just a faction of the knowledge many of you on this forum do, I have really tried in the last 3 or 4 years to educated myself while learning from some of the very best in the world in regard to what we collect.

I am no legal scholar, by any stretch of the imagination but I would like to think I know the difference between right and wrong.

I hope that the links provided in these very wordy posts both here and on the VAM world forum are at the very least educational.

Pretty sure most of us all already know counterfeits are illegal, to manufacture, sell, trade etc.. Do you know that it is also illegal for big business to profit from their sales? I am pretty sure that it has to be shown that they have known and have been complicit in the continued illegal activity. Most folks claim many fakes come from outside the US . They have consumer protection laws in place for that scenario as well.

What exactly is the feedback used for, beside just promoting future sales?
Why is my News Feed now cluttered with additional fake numismatic garbage, from other counterfeiters', ( these so called sponsored ADDS)just because I was hunting one of the crooks to report?

Why are many folks told after they report fakes to the host company, that the listing does not violate the company policy?

Is their policy somehow magically above the laws?

Every once in a while, a guy might get a listing pulled, but those numbers hardly make a dent .

Does ebay and ather platforms do a good job complying with consumer protection, and anti-counterfeiting laws?

Are the enforcement agencies, entrusted with protecting all collectors and consumers doing much of anything here?

We live in a world of 3 D printers and highly advanced scanning techniques. Ray Charles could probably spot a sloppily done imitation.
What about a fake that has the proper die markers, and the correct metal alloy ratio?Do you think it would really be all that hard to make more realistic die's in this day and age?
I wonder if there is not already some "Great Rarity "out there that is in truth just "a melt value trinket"

If I/we can't gain support for this quest I guess it dies on the vine.
Because if only a few of us care then it is all for naut .
You think I like coming off like a lunatic on a message board ?. I am just trying to do something about this !
I am severely handicapped behind a key board. so please forgive the messenger here .

It would be a mistake IMHO to ignore the message, because I feel it really is that important!

We are going to call it Operation Redfeather giving credit for the call to action to the man who inspired it . We REALLY DO need everyone's help.

This forum was, previously, one of the most active in reporting ebay coin scams and counterfeits - ebay basically gave the forum admins a backdoor to make such reports directly to an actual human within ebay, who would then take prompt action in getting the fakes delisted and the sellers NARUed. We removed thousands of fake coins before they could be sold. This was all done on a secret opt-in-only subforum so the fake-sellers wouldn't find out, but occasionally, one of the fake-sellers would figure out that it was us doing the reporting and getting their fakes delisted, and they'd threaten us with legal action. We ignored them, and no legal action ever eventuated.

This all stopped in February 2025, when ebay sacked the human, and replaced him with an AI. An AI which is programmed to take seriously ebay's core tenet that "everyone is basically good" and therefore scams and fakes either do not exist or are very very rare. Getting the AI to actually agree with you that a listed fake is actually in violation of ebay's policy is akin to pulling teeth with only your pinky finger - painful, slow, and almost certainly doomed to fail. Being persistent in continuing to report fakes will likely only result in the AI coming to the conclusion that it is you, the reporter, who is the problem for making maliciously false reports and will no longer pay any attention to your complaints.

The number of fakes on ebay has skyrocketed since this forum's fake-reporting capability was eliminated.

This highlights two issues with any proposed plan of action to tackle fakes:

1. Fake-sellers won't just sit there passively letting their corrupt business model be ruined - they'll fight back, trying to discourage anyone who publicly speaks out about them by threatening legal action or otherwise harrassing them - perhaps by infiltrating the fake-reporting group and "report" a bunch of genuine coins listed by reputable sellers.

2. Even if you find a process to eliminate fakes that does manage to work, it will not be permanent, as either ebay decides it's too much hassle dealing with whiny complaining counterfeit-sellers, or it simply isn't cost-effective to keep that door open.

It has always been true that counterfeit coins fall on a spectrum, ranging from "That's so ridiculously, obviously fake even a child or a noob should be able to spot that" to "It looks so real, even museums and experts have already been fooled by them". There are certainly fake coins out there, sitting undetected in museums and collections, awaiting the invention of some as-yet-unknown method of detecting their fakeness.

Modern technology is making it slightly easier to produce such high-quality fakes, but by far the biggest advance has been in global trade and communication, giving the fake-makers instant access to the global market. Most of the fakes are coming from China, and it's perfectly legal in China to make fake American coins. The only people committing crimes are the people who are importing these coins (often unwittingly) into the country. Yes, importing fake coins into America is illegal, but people doing this importing never put "fake coins" on their shipping import label. US Customs doesn't have the budget or manpower to search every single parcel and shipping container coming from China, looking for fake coins.

It is impossible for fake detection and avoidance to be proactive - collectors are always one step behind the fake-masters, as it's much easier to invent a new way of making or selling fake coins than it is to invent a foolproof way of preventing such things from happening.

Although the remaining context is important, this is pretty much the only point that a casual reader needs to understand: ebay thinks so little of proactively removing fakes that they replaced their solitary human gatekeeper with a brainless bot.

@Sap

Any chance I might borrow that last post of yours?
You might not know this, but I owe this forum a great dept and I would very much like to settle that dept.

I made a few posts here a few years back and got some direction. I am pretty sure that some very patient members here sent me on a journey to find a new home,

It has been awesome!

I realize you don't know me, and if this request requires a vetting process, I'm 99.9 % Sure I could get another Numismatic society President to vouch for me if needed.

I am still working on a family friendly version of this story to share.
but kids don't like unhappy endings, so I got to wait a while, and cross my fingers and toes.
It's been a little bumpy, so far, always something new to learn. I am not complaining, just so you know.

Thank you very much in advance!

In business school, we learned how to write a complaint letter.

1-2 sentences introducing the topic

1-2 sentences describing the problem.

1 sentence call to action

What you have are five or six different complaints.

eBay is the world's largest "to consumer" marketplace, with
both individual sellers and companies selling directly. ebay's terms
of service have robust protections for both sellers and buyers and
prohibit the listing and sale of imitation numismatic items (which,
unless properly marked, are illegal to sell in the USA).

Unfortunately, ebay rarely enforces these limitations, and the
recent increase in automation and AI has rendered the existing
reporting of imitation numismatic items inoperable.

We recognize there is a benefit to ebay to automate the rapid
processing of reports, but we are requesting the establishment of
an escalation/reconsideration process after the initial rejection.

Thank you all again. I am not ignoring anyone's suggestion, and very much apricate your time, advice, and mostly your help. I will be back, I ask only you please be patient, I still have some loose ends to tidy up, and a letter to shorten myself. These things take time. The letter needs a woman's touch, not an AI one, but a real one that has a real HEART .. Beside she has to put up with me the most. She is really good at it! BTW I am extremely blessed

I will be back

Yup, there was a fake 2026 silver eagle already on ebay, not presale, from China well below spot price, delivery in two weeks. Last month I reported it to ebay, explained the US Mint hasn't even released them yet and nobody would sell well below melt. ebay AI rejected my concern, did not delist it.

It's now gone, don't know if others complained and it was delisted or the cheating seller sold out.

eBay's AI can't find evidence of a fake coin, even when the title says "NOT REAL".

I found this "notice" a little more interesting today and possibly somewhat relevant to your last quote. IMHO

It's pretty much a matter of public record IMO, for anyone who has an ebay account that is doing any buying or selling under their terms of use. Agreements in general, I guess, sometimes could read differently on paper, than what is actually practiced by either party ?

Is it some type of digital contract that assumes both parties agree to terms and possible guarantees made in them? I Question,
it, and if even only implied for one specific point, could these terms apply as a matter of contract documents as a whole in general? ?. The context is somewhat indirect, (IMO) and somewhat circumstantial, surrounding these terms / privacy policies or whatever it sounds like on paper. I could not say if it may or may not be relevant. Depends on opinions of actual legal advice Given, I guess, AND I am not doing that!!!

I have read this thing multiple times in the past and clicked agree without actually reading it with different eyes, until today. I was Just tracking a purchase that won't make it in time for Christmas. oh well
I did however read it with different perspective and additional questions started to pop up in my head //

If nothing else I understand minimizing costs to maximize profits. That is a pretty basic business model . IMO
I also learned honest and ethical business transactions sure seemed to go along ways in the PR department, JUST A GENERAL OBSERVATION OVER HERE > not stating facts!

What I did not even think about like ever in the history of ever was if Hundreds and Hundreds of BILLIONS got tied up in a venture capital investment /RandD type of thing.. and the initial launch possibly, had a few too many "bugs" as seen by numbers not even Estimatable using whatever standards used to gauge that type of thing nowadays ? .

Hypothetical stuff needs to be proven one way or the other in that type of study . IMHO

I just have questions is all?....
