Quote: The 1916 is the leftmost coin on the third row (it has the diagnostics of a 1916). Maybe the 4th one in the row as well? smat

Good point @smat. Surely the lack of stars is one part of the answer. I'm including a pic of the reverses to help folks learn:

Look at the obverse leaves under the 'L' of 'Liberty' and compare them to other later issues. Pretty noticeable difference. Should be a clear diagnostic.

That graphic illustrates the differences between the 1916 and 1917, and the olive branch is not one of them. The coin in the auction exhibits every single characteristic of a 1916. It's a no doubter and I hope the winner of the auction knows what he has and doesn't sell it for scrap.

Thanks Marv65! This is definitely not my series. Couple of months ago in a batch of 90% I picked up...there were a number of slick SLQ's included. My first look was on the reverse for the stars. I quess because they all had the stars, I didn't look further. Now I know that else to look for. smat

It is a 1916!!!.. You only really have to see the one clear diagnostic along with the no stars..The top of the head goes slightly into the rim. This one clearly shows the head going into the rim just a smidge. Wish I saw that auction.

Yikes! I agree, I hope that they know as well and it doesn't get lost forever.

The creased robe under the arm and the lack of beads on the shield make this an "easy" call to be a 1916
