I get it. Frankly, I'm not too concerned from my perspective. I'm fortunate to have close-in access to several branches across three different banks. I have good rapport with several tellers, which has yielded a few surprises over the years. Going for quarters tomorrow...

Do y'all have open accounts at all of these banks? I ask, because when I've gone to banks where I do not have an account, they always have the same reply...they don't sell me coins unless I open an account. It hasn't always been the case, but it seems to be now.

Vector Ze: I've opened small ($100-$200) savings accounts at most of the banks I visit so that when a teller asks if I have an account I can answer "Yes". The bank where the manager every week orders two boxes for me required that I open a checking account, and have at least one check deposited every month (fair enough). Other CRHs: The best example of the benefit of explaining to tellers why I am interested in silver coins occurred last September. The teller at a BoA branch I don't visit very often set aside two CWRs of half dollars for two weeks because she noticed that the wrappers looked old. I found 28 Walking Liberty half dollars, two 1964 Kennedy half dollars, and 10 coins that contain 40% silver in those rolls.

CRHs don't agree on the wisdom of explaining to bank tellers why we try to acquire CRWs and BWRs. I've always shared my interest in silver coins with bank tellers. Most of them are bemused by my pursuit of this hobby. Only once has a teller at one of the local banks that I regularly visit purchased the silver coins after a customer cashed them. Today one of the more friendly tellers at a bank I often visit approached me while I was using the coin counting machine and told me that she was holding some "interesting" coins for me. It turns out that yesterday after a customer cashed eight half dollars she noticed that most of the coins had silvery edges. In fact, seven of those coins are 40% silver Kennedy half dollars. I thanked her for selling them to me at face value.  |
