How about this for a thought? Maybe this coin was once part of a mint set and the marks are from the cello crimping machine.

(Just tossing out ideas here )

Good idea, Dearborn.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

sounds reasonable, seeing how the marks are straight, not curved, and are at the very edge of the coin.

I thought the same thing this morning. But I don't believe that there was a "crimping machine" involved in making these sets

Here are some additional close-ups with different lighting and orientation. Thanks for the interesting discussion! I am used to seeing "bag marks" with a couple of reeding impressions, usually 2 or 3, but have never seen a line like this. I am almost positive it is PMD of some sort as there does seem to be a slight impression on the L. Just another oddball from box hunting.

I don't think this could come from the Ballistic Bag sealing process, either. Here are some photos Conder101 posted of the Ballistic Bags and related equipment a few years back.
