The branch manager was uncooperative when I spoke to her about the situation. First she told me that the bank (understandably) won't release information about their customers. I explained that I planned to leave cash in an envelope that the bank could give to the person who cashed the silver quarters if the teller could identify them. But she countered that the bank's only responsibility is to pay customers the face value of coins they deposit. Each customer is responsible to make a different decision if coins have additional intrinsic value.

We have entered a time where there are more that don't know than know when it comes to silver coinage. Probably been that way for a decade or more.

Had a teller around 12 years ago tell me a similar story. The branch was located in an older neighborhood; most customers were long lime clients--very long time. Once, someone came in with dozens and dozens of rolls of mixed denominations--cents, dimes, quarters, etc. The walk-in was a younger relative of a long time client who had recently passed. The 'youngster' was instructed to roll all the coins found in the home and take them to this particular branch location--the tellers had worked there for years and were known/trusted by the family. Turned out nearly all of the coinage was silver, with the exception of the cents--mostly wheats. A deposit was made for face value, even after the teller on duty at the time pointed out the silver. I missed that haul by several months.

one of the last times I was at my fiat bank, I brought in a haul of about $100 in rolls of coins.. cents, nickels, dimes & quarters. the teller questioned one of my rolls and I assured her- staking my reputation as a coin collector on it- that my count was accurate. she insisted on checking it. I said 'go for it'.

turned out that I was right; my count was accurate.

while I watched her (and another teller) dumping my rolls and counting coins I struck up a little conversation. I asked if they ever had collectors coming in looking for anything; she said yes, several. so that sort of quashed any ideas I might have had about doing the same. there are numerous other collectors coming into the bank looking for anything/everything. I'm not going to bother with it. not just yet, anyway. if I decide I want to pursue obtaining searchable rolls from my fiat bank, I had better come up with a good plan (ie, a 'bribe' of some kind). I just don't know what that could be yet and it's not a priority.

i think about it from time to time, though I don't act on those thoughts.
