Quote: Seatednut , a couple of times I've read about an unattractive brown toning , this would seem to fly in the face of all the fuss being made about it.A long time to wait for dissapointment. Could the sunlight have had its affect ? I've got mine in a wooden cigar box in a dark closet,no light whatsoever..will mine differ any..we'll see I guess. wg ... Sunlight and the accompanying heat are key to expediting the process. Without it, you could be looking at "years" for any noticeable results. and PennehChaos Quote: It's my understanding that the reason you get toning in older albums is due to the acidity of the paper, and that this can damage the coin given enough time/poor enough grade of paper... can anybody confirm/debunk? Not acid directly, it's the sulphur content of the paper. Waite-Raymond albums had a higher than normal content and created some spectacular rim toning at the points of contact. The chemists may weigh in and offer that the chemical reaction is the result of sulphuric acid ... I fell asleep in chemistry.

Say what you like about taco bell napkins but I have heard you cannot do better than an office Depot white letter envelope for toning silver. I'll see if I can find a not so nice Eagle and run my test along side the napkin test... http://www.mycoins.us/Eagle_in_the_...n_toning.htm

I recently pulled out a 1988 ASE that I put in a plain manilla coin envelope last year and was floored by the colors ... peach and orange in the center, darkening to golden brown towards the edges, with a hint of violet at the denticles. The toning was very uniform, without blotches. I wondered why the Taco Bell napkin Morgan was so mottled and ugly. That ASE was untouched on the surface. Evidently the Morgan (a high AU, not BU) had uneven surface conditions that promoted toning in some areas and resisted toning in others. I am going to retest that coin after a dip to remove the old toning, an acetone bath and thorough rinse.

here is a coin I did a year or so ago. It may not have been quite as dark when I took it out of the napkin but it was close

I have my 20 cent piece in one for a few weeks now. It looked like it was maybe cleaned long ago. BTW around here we have a lot of KFC connected directly to Taco Bell so the KFC was where I went one day for some extra crispy. They share the same napkins. It is too early to even peek for me.

The Morgan I mentioned on 7/27 just went into the napkin two days ago. Where did the time go? I think I'll give it a bit more time before I check. I gave it a quick EZ-Est dip to remove the ugly mottled tone, a thorough rinse and then into the acetone bath. Another good rinse and blow dry followed. I cut a strip of the Taco Bell napkin and wrapped it around the circumference of the coin (trying to promote a bullseye toning effect), then wrapped this in a white napkin and taped it closed. I placed it on top of the hot water heater (more out of the way than the window sill) as heat is a accelerant in this reaction. Now I must be patient ...

I have joined your experiment group. I have placed an ASE bullion wrapped in Taco Bell napkins and a small manila envelope. That envelope is placed in the smoke vent screen above my stove. It should see a steady diet of heat and steam moisture. Stephen

This is a great thread, I'm glad that it was re-awakened from the depths.

As a new collector I find toning very interesting. I don't own enough coins to experiment with yet, but could someone post pictures as it's been a while now?

Something I noticed the other day, I detected an odor of hydrogen sulfide in some napkins. If you have driven by or worked in a paper mill you know the smell. I have a real strong sense of smell though. If a particular batch of napkins had a stronger smell, I would assume they would cause more aggressive toning. White napkins are bleached. I don't know what process they use, but I would think that chlorides would react differently with silver than sulfides would? Something else I thought of. When you wrap a coin the sulfide vapors come in contact with the coin causing oxidation(toning.) After awhile the vapors contacting the coin would have to weaken because the inner layers of napkin would be shielding the coin from the outer layers of napkin. Would you get a different result by placing a coin inside a tightly sealed empty cereal box? After all, the coin would be sealed inside a sort of vapor chamber. Just some thoughts. A chemist would be very helpful.
