I don't know squat about Morgans DV so I don't understand the surface either. Yea, the wing mark is incuse, I need to look at that closer sometime. I need to learn more about Morgans too!

My gut tells me this is all post mint damage of some nature. There appears to be a raised area around the vertical bar that should not be there if this was done at the time of striking. There is also horizontal damage to the eagles head that ends at the bar on each side. The damage to the wing seems to be a blow that continues down to the claws and arrow shafts. This is one that you wish you could reach into the screen and pluck the coin out to examine in hand.

In your first set of pictures, especially the last one of the set, I just don't see how post mint damage would retain the "orange peel" look down near the bottom of the mark. I would think something hard enough to make that much of an impression would also smooth out the area a bit. Having said that, I wonder if that explains the flatness in the hair curls on the obverse. Meaning that it was some type of hit, and the resultant pressure from the post mint strike flattened out the details.......  I'm riding both sides of the fence right now. |

Thad, I had another thought about that oval-shaped mark on the eagle's head--is there a design within that mark? There's something about the position that seems deliberate, as some kind of "chop mark" to check silver content? I've seen other coins with chops across small designs and wanted to toss that idea out there. |

I'm no pro but here is my guess, post mint damage with either a sandblasted effect or maybe some sort of acid wash done after the damage. John1  |

We've been around the block on this one on another forum. The person who said it is fake is correct. This coin is completely phony.
