Quote: Well actually I don't TRUST either one of them. Good point! However, in this case HSN is clearly trying to move product by spreading speculative rumors, and the Mint is not. Would the Mint itself see an increase in 2009 Uncirculated Coin Set sales if they themselves announced that the 2009 Set was to be the 'last' in Satin Finish? Probably not... (but from the sentiments expressed here, collectors would be really happy to be able to get a 2010 Uncirculated 'Standard-Finish' Coin Set!)

Yes, I think they would, because a lot of collectors would lemming-like rush right out and order a bunch of the them BECAUSE they were the last ones. But in order to capitalize on that the mint would have had to have made that announcement publicly and early enough to get the orders in and the coins made. They didn't do that, which means that if they were discontinuing the satin finish they missed a marketing opportunity. The Mint doesn't miss to many of those.

Well, regardless of which way this turns out, and it looks like it "couldn't" be true, (which should just continually make the HSN guys go FURTHER DOWN in credibility....if they could go any lower !) I had my three 2009 Uncirculated Satin Finish Sets secured a long time ago.......I only wish they were NON-satin Sets ! .... The thought that stands out for me......"the Mint missing a marketing opportunity".....IMHO, THAT is the best point here that leads me to believe this ISN'T going to happen and the Snake Oil Salesmen have struck again. Anybody got some tar and a bunch of feathers ? ..... (edited Topic Heading appropiately now!)

Of course, if the Mint had officially announced the demise of Satin Finish Sets, HSN would have capitalized on that opportunity even more than the Mint would have. (I was having some horrid visions of the Sets being sold on HSN for $99.99 each if that happened! ) Of course, if the Mint flooded the market with extra Sets for all the 'lemmings' (to take advantage of such a discontinuation), that would likely hurt the Set's resale value in the long term... We (on this forum) seem to be the "Official Satin Finish Haters Club", so we wouldn't have been running out to grab extra 2009 Sets, but HSN sure as heck would have been hawking them to Grandma and Grandpa to get extra Sets for the grandkids. And yes third party hype does add to the 'lemming' effect that Conder spoke of.... The Mint did 'miss one' this year: The LP1 Cent Mint Rolls! But notice how quickly they upped the quantities made for the other LP Mint rolls.... Then the Lincoln Dollars flew out so fast, that guaranteedmassive hype for the C&C Set. Someone at the Mint was kicking themselves for setting aside only 50,000 Proofs for the C&C Set.

He is a shyster for sure, bordering on unethcial. Oh yes, the State Quarters are sooooo rare. There aren't rolls and rolls of uncirculated ones sitting around the place. My local coin shop doesn't still have a piles of them for a little over face value.

I just bought another 2009 Mint Set today at the Denver Mint Gift Shop. This time I got a high-grade Set on the first try! It could be worse, eaglefoot: Your girlfriend could be collecting Lincoln Cents and Half-Dollars. She could be casting covetous eyes at the 95% Copper Cents in the 2009 Mint Set sitting on your computer desk, then finally she chops up that Set with scissors and absconds with the Cents and JFK's. (and gives the Quarters to your daughter!) Not to worry, I had two high-grade Sets locked away (now three!). That's what I get for saying I had an "extra Set" on my desk.... Good news: one of our members got the 2009 P/D 5/10¢ coins for "hole fillers"

In the Set I had on my desk, most of the 8 Pres. Dollars had a few small hairline scratch marks, so it wasn't a "high-grade" Set. As you know, the only source for this year's 95% Copper P+D Cents (and the Satin JFK's) is, you guessed it, the 2009 Mint Set. This is why I like this Set's prospects, not because of HSN 'snake oil' rumors. There were a massive number of 2009 Proof Sets broken up for the Cents, and this likely applies for the 2009 Mint Sets (I can speak from personal experience here!). At the last big coin show I was at (Denver Coin Expo), I counted over 1,000 broken-out 2009 Proof Cent lenses that were for sale individually, and numerous broken-out 2009 Satin Finish coins. One dealer was selling Territorial Quarter folders filled with the Satin Finish P+D Quarters. I also saw a dealer who had filled Jefferson nickel and Roosevelt dime Dansco's, which had 2009 P+D Satin Finish coins in place of the business strikes. PS: She has a 5-gallon water jug ¾-full of common-date Wheats! It's so heavy, I have to use my hand truck to move it...

Again last night he's saying the same stuff throughout the entire length of the program ! He's saying that this is a "Congress Act" that has been passed and that there won't be any more "Satin Finish". He isn't using the words "The US Mint has announced". Good grief !......Has anybody checked any "Congressional news" I have to say.....I'm still not 100% sure about what exactly is true or not here......

This makes it the fourth occassion he's said "no more satins".
If your career depends on your credibility would you risk it to make a few bucks on one type of inexpensive coin? I could see him lying if they were in the hole on thousands of real expensive coins, and your TV show was closing down.
He's got to come back for many years to sell gazillions of other coins, there may be a fire, behind this smoke.

Quote: He's got to come back for many years to hard-sell gazillions of other coins. That's true, you know: 2010 is the last year of the Satin Finish Mint Sets. And then 2011 will be the last year of the Satin Finish Mint Sets. And don't forget: 2012 will be the last year of the Satin Finish Mint Sets. For 2012, he'll say that the Mayans ended their calendar system because they foresaw the end of the Satin Finish Mint Sets . Quote: If your career depends on your credibility... He works for HSN, he doesn't have to worry about that. His job is to sell. He could say that aliens landed their mothership on your roof last night to take all of Earth's Satin Finish coins, and if that sold tons of HSN's coins, his bosses would be quite happy with him! [PS: My girlfriend and the kids saw Mr. Snake Oil Man on HSN last night, sadly I was out picking up the pizza for dinner and I missed hearing his pitch....]

I have never watched the show. Sounds like you have. So how many times has this particular individual lied about coins that you know of?

I saw them selling NGC PF69UC ASEs for like $178 each for the common dates the other night. My wife will not even let me watch those shows anymore because I get too mad.

Traditionally, it wasn't really "lying" going on on HSN, just massive hype and ridiculous overpricing. It's literally like watching the classic concept that people have of a "used car lot" (except that even used car lots don't dare to be that obvious nowadays!). You can always say that you've heard rumors from an unnamed source, but when the HSN guy is referring to some non-existent 'act of Congress', that's crossing the line....

Anything that is sold on HSN is overpriced and def not rare, from what I've seen. The mint has been producing so many special coins and commemoratives the past 15 yrs or so that they are in competition with the coin dealers. It's a big joke.
