I think it's a solid MS63 RB. Nice coin!

It doesn't look like it has any wear and the spotting isn't that distracting (I like how my eye moves through this coin). I agree it's a 63 (probably RB, too).

I wonder, at what point, UNC or MS does or does not include, "not well-cared-for."

1. I dont think the gouge and scratches on the reverse are bag marks (consider there are no other bag-type marks anywhere else on the coin).

2. I dont like the wear/erosion around UL in PLURIBUS. Looks as if it might have even been cleaned.

3. I'm curious about the concave on the top of the east ear.

Id grade it AU.

MS/Damaged is an oxymoron to me.

break out the firing squad....I'm ready !

Do you have any last requests? Do you want a blindfold? A cigarette?

OK, OK, OK, enough of that, let's take them from the top (then gotsta scram)...

#1: Those may for sure be scratches, but scratches aren't going to keep it out of MS. It will get a details grade for that, but that's all, really.

#2: I think that's just the die, no? If it's circulation wear, how did the high points on the other side (ear, cheek, jaw, vest) manage to escape that? That's some trick.

#3: Is that East from the coin's perspective or from the viewer's perspective? Seriously, I'm not sure I know what you're driving at, there. I do see a difference in the wheat ears, but that looks to me like it's just the way the light's laying.

PS: Not trying to be confrontational, I trust you understand (just saying what I think)...

Thad, what is that dent/mark on the rev by the left wheat ear. Pic does not really show it well. Overall, the coin is MS-62/63 but I believe that the spots (copper formate? see I'm learning this chemist stuff) ;) will hurt the coin. It really knocks the eye appeal down, at least on pics. My guess is that it is much nicer in hand.

No worries, Eddie...I appreciate your response and your perspective. Jim 1953 asked Thad about the wheat ear.

Maybe I'm jaded...the logic that gives too much latitude to so many different damages coins in Mint "State," (particularly after theyve left the mint) damages my brain !

There's no "dent" by the left wheat, those are mint stains. The 11-S is tough to find in MS and even tougher to find a clean one. I cherrypicked this S/S off my local dealer.

BTW - I graded this coin MS-63 RB....same as what my dealer and his partner (Lincoln expert) graded it. Funny, but normal for these guys, they missed the S/S.

1) Mint damage, hey they all can't be perfect.

2) That is due to the strike. That area and the O in ONE are often weak on Lincolns due to the strike. That's one of the reasons the Mint lowered the relief on the portrait shoulder.

3) Optical illusion unless you're talking about the rim. The 1911-S Lincolns are known for shallow rims.

Thanks for the comments. I enjoy hearing positve and negative!

Just to clarify point 2, note the area of interest in the overlay.
