eagle; for me, breaking them open would be contingent upon my collection and empty holes. If I had empty holes for those coins in a proof collection, I'd break them open. If not, I wouldnt.
Heard here and there more than once, "When in doubt, do nothing."

You can find ones to crack open on ebay fairly cheap. I bought one last week for $11 ($13 after ship) and cracked it open for my 7070. They look nice and shiney in there. If its sentimental I would just keep them. Lots of time I keep junk for sentimental reasons and will most likely keep it till the day I die. Or pass it on to someone close to you that will appreciate it for what you have.

Eaglefoot,
I see you have a bit of a decision to make, I have to agree with some others, keep the "set your father " gave you intact, just because He gave it to you, and go out and pick up another set, as suggested, and fill those holes, good luck, Mike...PS, Any tornadoes touching down by you!!

Eaglefoot, I realize that you are an ebay "virgin" but for under $20.00 I'd take a chance and pick up a cheapo set to bust open. Obviously it is not the set that is causing your difficulty, it is the gift factor. Getting one off ebay would solve this dilemma and keep your dad's gift intact. As to the uncirc. set... bust it out it was only able to stay together in it's picture frame holder (OGP) for about a week... old glue!

Yeah....a year or so back, I "actually" signed up on ebay, at least I think I did....maybe it was "paypal" or something.....I really don't remember.......nor any passwords or usernames or anything whatsoever. And after I signed up, I didn't even go on ebay "to look at stuff" again for like a year, so.... I was going to ask thoughts (or, I guess I did) on my "Blister packs" Philly uncirculated Sets from the 1960's, still in the Treasury envelopes.....but I assume it's all still the same theme with the '76 Set. I guess I might have to "re-investigate" this ebay thing !

It can work both ways. If your dad knew you needed some coins to fill some holes in your 7070 ... I am sure he would have gladly bought them for you to do that.
Point two .. I bet you look at your 7070 many more times than you look at that 3 coin set. You would know when you look at your 7070, that those coins came from your father.
For me .. I think my father would be proud to have some coins he gave me to be in such a nice collection like a 7070.

I would think that your dad gave those to you so that you could do whatever you wanted with them. I'm sure he'd be happy either way knowing you did whatever made you happy.
If you had cracked them the day he gave them to you and they went straight into your albums, how do you think he would have reacted. Proud of you, I'm sure. If you do crack them, your album will always have that much more value when you see those holes filled and know that they were because of your father.
But, like everyone else, I vote if you're not sure - do nothing with that set and go buy another to crack for your albums. I don't think you will be wrong either way.

You know me, I broke apart all of my proof sets to fill my Dansco albums. Well, I should say almost all of them. My mother bought me the Prestige Proof Set a few times in the 1990's. Those sets are still intact for the obvious sentimental reasons. Since she bought me those, I chose not buy the regular proof sets those years (I was still collecting them as sets, not for albums). When the time came and I started cracking, I did have to go buy duplicate proofs for those years. I did not want to "destroy" the gift. I think your choice is clear. What might not be so clear is whether or not you get the extra set from ebay.

My "justification" for opening all of these Treasury Dept. envelopes and the '76 Sets, was two main points......save me money from having to buy them....and I would still have my Dads gifts, but they would just be in the albums. But, after reading the replies.....and especially JB's, I cannot "crack" anything from my Dad. For one, I know he would be appalled at the idea, as many folks are with doing that for albums. And the other thing, is his only grandson, my Nephew, will most likely inherit these things from me, and they will be his Grandpa's Sets. (Don't get me wrong, my Dad has given him A LOT of Morgans, Sets, and other coin related stuff through the years!) But, I think that I am just the "current caretaker" of some of my stuff.....and that it should and will go to the next generation in my family. Maybe my Nephew will crack them for an album someday anyway !! ....LoL.....but, I'll just "spend the money" and keep everything intact. (though, I'm still thinking about the Treasury Dept. envelopes in the blister packs ! ..... )

Just bought the 1776/1976 Silver Proof Set for $15.00 from this coin shop I went to for the first time ! The one I saw on ebay sold for almost $14.00.....so....add postage/shipping.....I figured $15.00 was a fair price, so now I have the "replacement" Set !
