Actually, he added that AFTER the auction was over.

The auction closed at 13:20 PDT and he added that at 13:25 PDT, but still stated "bid by your own knowledge and research. I am not a coin collector, and I am still selling this coin as posted".

Didn't look at what you say Scooby, but that's impossible. You cannot edit a listing once it's over.

The seller should be suspended. Once proven to him it was counterfeit he should have removed it. I've reported it to the CCW, so now the buyer will get an email telling him the coin is suspect, the listing has been removed, and he doesn't have to pay. Even if he already has paid, he will have no trouble getting his money back as long as he paid with Paypal.

If you read to the bottom of the auction listing ..... he admits this is a fake and does so before the closing time.

Soooooo ..... who is to blame here?

E-Pray for allowing such stuff?

The seller for keeping it live while knowing it is fake?

The buyer for paying all those $$ for a fake?

I tend to put my foot on the seller ...... he knew it is fake and should have pulled the auction IMHO.

David

I blame the seller and ebay. Fakes should not even be allowed on ebay in the first place. I just hate seeing all of the listings that say Copy or Replica.

Well, ebay can't review every listing. It's unrealistic. Think ebay fees are high now? Imagine if they had to hire experts in every category to review every listing. They will usually act on reported listings though. Unfortunately, most people would rather complain for hours about it than take 45 seconds to report them.

I'm not trying to blame the buyer but who would bid $250 on a coin without even checking the price in a book or online?

More made in Red China counterfeit junk. ebay doesn't care as long as they get their cut of the action.

I hate copies and replicas as much as the next guy and think they shouldn't be allowed to exist at all. But, if the seller states copy or replica and shows it, you can't blame them if someone is dumb enough to bid on it.

That said, how someone can just blindly bid on a coin without at least knowing something about the series, or at least take the time to look up what is FMV for a coin, then realize that the year/mm doesn't exist, is beyond me.

The copies and replicas are stupid but I don't know if they should be banned. I can see someone buying a replica 09sVDB, for example, to stick in a book if they've decided not to spend what it takes to buy a real one. I'd personally leave a hole I can see doing something like that.

I have a few "tribute proof" Morgans that are clearly stamped as copies that I got as part of a lot. I'm planning to list them on ebay because I don't want them. I'll make it clear that they are copies. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I shouldn't have said "if someone is dumb enough to bid on it". What I meant was "if someone is dumb enough to bid SICK MONEY on it".

I know a lot of people would buy replicas to fill those '09-S VDB holes, or '16 SLQ, '16-D Mercs or (insert weapon of choice here), but personally, I'd rather see a gaping hole than a replica.

People, when posts disappear form a topic, there is always a reason, we don't just do it for fun. Continuing to post about them in the topic just adds to the Staff's workload and the overall confusion. Emails have been sent. In this scenario in the future, please ask the questions privately.

This may sound harsh but I'd rather they learn the hard way so they don't do it again and educate themselves.

I reported the item via the link provided on this forum Sunday evening, monday morning I received a email from ebay reguarding my report,

Quote:
Dear ebay Member,

Thanks for reporting this listing to us.

I investigated this listing and confirmed that it violated our Selling
Currency policy. As a result, I removed the listing.

Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping
ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.

Sincerely,

Heidi
ebay Customer Support

So when you come upon questionable listings where some un-suspecting hobbist could get burned take a couple minutes to report the item to ebay, they will do something about it.
