Save it and maybe someday we'll be reading about you and the 1 million pennies you have in little plastic tubes. Not to mention the 1 million nickels, 1 million dimes........................

Dean,

I save all my change in a 5 gallon water jug. Then every two or three months I empty it, take it to the bank and cash in to buy some other type of coin. I think it's just a matter of preference but I like spending mine!

I like the way you think Christina.

I think that is what I am going to do. It will allow me to get my collection supplies I need to preserve what I do have and maybe get a few other goodies as well.

Plus, my daughter's 18th birthday is just a month away and I promised her a good one this year. She only turns 18 once and I want to make it special for her and this will be the only way I can afford it.

Thanks to all of you who posted a response. I know I should probably have waited for a few more but I really wanted to make this decision tonight so that I could get busy rolling them up this weekend.

Anyone need any Numis coin tubes? LOL.

P.S. I made a list of errors out of the Red Book. I will be checking all of these.

I may need the money but I'm not crazy! Maybe I will get lucky and find a couple. A nice Wisconsin extra leaf wouldn't hurt.

Another option would be to save half of the change you get back in the tubes like you have been doing, so you continue the work that you started. The other half keep separately and then save that to cash in at a later time. That way you don't have to feel bad about spending all that time on it only to cash it all in. I don't know about you but I NEVER use change when I buy something...I always save it.

First of all, Welcome to the forum ducky. Love the avatar.

I start out by saving all the loose change. I currently have probably $20 worth on my desk top. Then, when I have time, I sort through it. I currently have an estimated 50,000 pennies. Any coins which are older and in great condition, I either store, or give away. If there isn't a pressing bill which needs to be paid, I take the remainder and put it in a jar labeled "Cruise Fund." Periodically, the change in that jar goes to the credit union and is deposited. I then make a note that it is part of the cruise fund, and it takes us one step closer to doing something we really enjoy.

So, I save, then sort, then store and save the rest for a fun activity.

Personally, I have a HUGE glass beer mug on my desk--All coins go into that puppy. When it is full, my wife and daughters wrap them up with the paper wrappers you can get from the bank for free. We then deposit them into either my daughters savings account for her use when she goes to college, or it goes into our personal savings account. I usually check the coins as I dump them into the jar--I mainly look for silver coins or very old coins in good shape, those I keep. Just for reference, when that jar is full, its wrap up time--the most we ever wrapped up was about $75-$80 depending on how many quarters were put in there. So I guess we save our change, not spend it.

I'd suggest that a roll collection will get pricey and it might be more fun to just start a regular collection. If the roll set will give you more pleasure then go for it and try to get the nicest and most varied rolls available. When you're short of money to add to it then you can just take a break. The plastic tubes probably won't go to waste if you decide not to collect these.

If you need the cash, I'd say save those coins that you really like out of the rolls (if there are any) and just spend the rest.

We save it and once a year go to Deadwood, SD and play the slots. Sometimes win, most times lose...

I find it interesting that so many of us adults save our loose change in jars and or a piggy bank type of jar. I too have the 10 gallon jug but, haven't touched it in quite some time. We save our pocket change, after I search it, in a piggy bank entitled "Golfing Fund". I then wrap the change when it get's too full and heavy and then we spend it...so much for the "golfing fund" eh?

My collection first started as a Kennedy half dollar 1976 given to me by my exgirlfriend and then it grew from there

Cash that spare change in and get something nice for your collection. I've put off doing the same over the past 5 years and now I have about 60 pounds of rolled coins. It's a nuicance. I'm not even sure if the canvas sack it's in would hold if I lifted it up.
