Why Do You Buy Bags And Rolls From The Mint?

It's not easy getting them from a bank. So if you buy them from a coin dealer, on ebay, or even here you're paying a premium plus shipping.

I've found a variety of different errors, mostly dealing w/ the edge lettering - unfortunately I haven't found any missing edge lettering, but I've found messed up (bad spacing, missing random letters, bunched up letters, extra stars) edge lettering on just about every different President and Native American dollar type. Sometimes there's a dry spell, but more often than not, I find at least one in each $500 shipment (I always order 2 of the $250 boxes for each president).
I also found one 10% clipped planchet and one rotated die error.

I used to get a P and a D of everything from the mint because my CU does not get new coins. They recycle what they take in from members. I see some good rolls in respect to older coins. I've since reduced my mint ordering to penny rolls only. Local banks I deal with are hit and miss. At least the mint guarantees me receiving what I want. The cost of mint rolls are ridiculous but, as I said, I get what I want.

I have been collecting the "bags" of Territories and the America the Beautiful Quarters, WHY, because this is a good place for the "out of the ordinary errors to be found", many types of coins that do not fit in a coin roll are found this way. Odd shaped double struck coins, multiple struck coins, etc.

I hope to check these all out some day, as with the Presidential dollar rolls I have also collected from day one, you never know! Good luck, Mike...

No one said the banks CAN'T get them or WON'T get them, the thing is they can't specifically order them like they could the State Quarters. Instead whether or not they get them when they order quarters is the luck of the draw. If the Fed has old coins on hand that's what they get. If they don't then they get the new coins. Your bank has been lucky. What would you do if they AREN'T lucky of the next four or five issues?



The Mint is set up for shipping out coins in multi ton lots. In order to get you those $25 bags they have to go through extra handling, storage, marketing etc. You pay for that extra trouble . if you want them for $25 that's fine. Keep checking at the bank. Of course you may not get them either.

They are offering bags of nickels now? That's the first I've heard of those. I haven't known them to sell nickels since 2006 when the Westward Journey series ended.

I buy the bags out of a sense of history. When the old penny bags went away, I went to buying what was left offered in bags. No rationalle, Just like a bag.....old fashioned.
