In the pictures, the arrow shafts to the right of the eagle's talons are worn completely down. They don't connect the talons to the arrowheads like they normally should. Hard to tell if it's just the picture, or a weak strike, or if it's wear. If it's either of the former two, I'd give it an AU-53. If it's wear, it's heavy localized wear, and would significantly lower the grade.

I looked at that when buying the coin.
To me it looks like this coin came from the mint that way, the missing arrow shafts.
I am thinking this is a coin that may have come from worn die's.
Based on the stars stretching into the rim. I have seen other 1829/27 where the arrow shafts are weak.
So I am just guessing that this area may have been polished out, another factor is these die's were stamped 1827 then over stamped 1829. So were these die's sitting around for 2 years then used again. If so I can see where this area could be polished out.
The coin, in hand, does not look like the missing arrow shafts is from wear.
I bought this coin as a XF or better coin .. of course hoping for better.
I am very open to others opinion on this

I don't see how it could possibly be from wear since it's not the high point on the coin, nor does it look worn in the picture. Another possibility is that the die was filled in that area, or plugged with something. The rest of the reverse strike looks pretty strong, and it seems conceivable that the arrow shaft, being such a tiny crevice, could easily get plugged up. |

I'm also leaning towards a weak strike, given that the stars on the obverse are weakly struck as well. Nice coin nonetheless, and from a quick ebay search it looks like you did very well on price. |

the arrow shafts are lower than the arrow heads and the talons. they are not missing from wear but due to die wear or a Grease Filled Die.. |

The arrow shafts are 'in fact' missing due to a technique referred to as lapping. This term equates to heavy grinding and subsequent polishing of the die. Most likely the cause for this was that the die received damage or disfiguration in that area. Regardless of cause, this die had been reworked.
Notice also that the tail feathers above the bird's right talon are also missing. Lapping is also the reason for this.
As echizento pointed out, this variety is O-101a, and these are the main characteristics of that reverse die. On the early sate of the die (O-101), the tail feathers and arrow shafts are complete.

A great original coin that should probably grade out to about AU55 tops. A super buy for $160. The carbon spotting (if that's what it is) on the obverse definitely takes away from the eye appeal of the coin and might impact the overall grade. The fact that the arrow shafts are missing is either die wear or filled die. I would side with zeewool and the "lapping" comment as having removed the shafts from the die. What a great overdate and in super condition to boot I'd buy that for $160 any day!

zeewool ... sounds like you know what your talking about.
So far it seems like those that gave a grade are leaning to mid AU. The more I look at this coin I really like the detail, compared to other bust halves I have. I think I will put this on in my 7070 for a upgrade.
