That is truly amazing. Does acetone do ANY sort of surface damage to coins? I have a 1871 IHC that has a touch of green stuff on it and I've been thinking of doing what you've done. I just don't want to ruin it in the process.

Acetone reacts with organic matter and not with the metal so it will clean the PVC and stuff but not harm the coin. It should be just fine.

One thing though is that the green stuff will get on the Q-tip so you should use a few. I used about 4 or 5 on this coin to get it cleaner.

I am not seeing a before and after.

Only the before, then some irrelevant commemorative coins.

It appears that you uploaded some more photos with the same file names as those used in your sales thread.

(By the way, I just cleared my cache and now I see the correct images. I viewed your sales thread earlier when I moved it to the ended area).

ah man that was a very rare 1904 type2
it was worth around $ 15,000 in vf-2 unmolested condition , no that you cleaned it . it is worth about one dollar and fifty cents if anyone even wants it anymore

It turned out great. Do you roll the q-tip between your fingers when cleaning? I also found out that the tackier the q-tip the better the cleaning.

The lame ones dont have much fluff so they are more abrasive. and I roll a little bit but for the most part just rub. I wasnt really worried about hurting the coin.

If you are going to use a q-tip, make sure the q-tip and coin are wet at all times! A light touch is best, do not scrub, and you run a great risk of hairlines if you are not working wet. I would not recommend using a q-tip on an MS or proof coin, that work is much less forgiving than on a circulated coin.

If its PVC then it will come back if you have not removed it all. I would suggest a soak in Acetone then a rinse with distilled water to make sure....

I agree with that. Regardless of whatever it was on there another dunk in the Acetone might just help more. Since Acetone will not effect the coin, nothing to loose. Just make sure you use new Acetone. Anything more than that, I'd just leave alone. Great job as is.

Just a word of caution. Acetone is explosively flammable.
That means no open flame, pilot lights, static sparks or any other possible source of ignition in the vicinity.

Use good ventilation the high might be fun for some. But the hangover is hideous

When I was manufacturing resins for paint bases, Acetone was the one solvent that truly frightened the management. We had to make sure our containers were mutually grounded when we were pouring from one to another.

One of my co workers was badly burned when he was blown across a large room and up against a concrete wall. He was in the process of weighing some acetone at the time.
As a result they had to shut down the plant for two years.

It is great stuff when properly used. I buy it by the Gallon. Just be careful

Glad you brought that all up Slumgerjack. Acetone is mentioned so many times on this and other coin forums, most forget the safety details. Also, many have read about Acetone and have no idea of what they are saying but just want to join in the conversation so they just repeat what they read somewhere else. The safety precaustions are something that should always be mentioned when suggesting the usage of any dangerous substance.
Possibly more people should spend a little time on the ATSDR seb site. Agency for Toxic Substances & Diseace Registry.
I usually tell people to use the Search tab at the top prior to using Acetone for all the info available right here.
Thanks again for your comments.
