This one is a classic - and it actually inspired one of our smilies! (Only quoting a short snippet, because around it the lyrics get even more freaky.)
Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring Banana phone! Boop-boo-ba-doo-ba-doop! Ping pong ping pong ping pong ping Po-nana phone! It's no baloney, it ain't a phony - My cellular, bananular phone!
Don't need quarters, don't need dimes, to call a friend of mine! Don't need computer or TV, to have a real good time! I'll call for pizza, I'll call my cat, I'll call the white house, have a chat! I'll place a call around the world, operator, get me Beijing-jing-jing-jing!
...Incidentally, I've checked the lyrics on three different websites, and got three (subtly) different versions. So I decided to make my own sorry. (If you now can't get this song out of your head... also sorry.)
Here's forty shillings on the drum To those who volunteer to come, To 'list and fight the foe today Over the Hills and far away.
Bottom dollar
Bottom dollar, it looks like the end, oh how I hate to see you go Bottom dollar, we've been the best of friends We musta counted on each other a hundred times or more Oh and my, oh my, how those eagles fly Goodbye bottom dollar, goodbye
Bottom dollar, all your friends have gone They've been blown on dance hall girls and wine Bottom dollar, if the truth was known You've been the bestest friend I'll ever find Oh and my, oh my, how those eagles fly Goodbye bottom dollar, goodbye
Oh and my, oh my, how those eagles fly Goodbye bottom dollar, goodbye Goodbye bottom dollar goodbye Old friend of mine
Probably no Dutch song mentioned, but Tante Julia by Boudewijn de Groot makes reference to a coin:
'Dus in het kerkenzakje deed ik braaf m'n kleverige cent.'
Which translates to something like 'So I voluntarily put my sticky cent in the church donation bag'.
Just for the record, in The Netherlands it's common to collect money at the end of a church service, usually via a bag at the exit. The Dutch cent hadn't been in use for decades until it saw a semi-revival with the Euro. Dutch 1 and 2 Euro-cent coins are nowadays only minted in limited numbers for use in sets. As this song is from the 1970's and tells about the youth of the artist, the cent was very much alive back then. :)
Quote: For what it is worth, he got his name from Kelvin Martin, the original 50 Cent.
Although, I would like to think he keeps a Kennedy half dollar pocket piece.
I actually heard a much heftier and more juicy story on this (and that's why I remember it). Not sure how much is true, but there might be a connection between your and my story.
Anyway, for what I heard is that he had a half dollar piece, apparently as a pendant on a chain around his neck (might be because of Kelvin Marin references, I don't know that) and he got shot (So far it's a likely story when it comes to gangsta rappers, I'd say). Instead of killing him, the shooter hit the coin. Which is why the guy still lives and as a dedication to this miracle, he changed his stage name to 50 Cent.
I cannot find any credible source for that story. He has been shot a few times, but no recorded account of his shootings indicates his being saved in such a manner. I would assume this story is an urban legend.
