World Mules

I can think of some interesting ones from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and UK.

Struck in 1967 by The Royal Mint in London there is the coin intended for circulation with New Zealand 2 cent reverse coupled with the Bahamas 5 cent obverse. There is no date on this coin. On arrival in NZ, the error was discovered and some coins were given to members or coin societies.

More recently the Valcambi Mint in Switzerland struck some Copper Nickel Unc coins with New Zealand $5 Cormorant reverse paired with Solomon Islands $1 obverse for the New Zealand 2000 Brilliant Uncirculated Coin Set. Less than 20 are thought to exist.

Wayne,it was the 1981,not the 1985.There are 6 pieces known for this mule,which all turned up in Canada.There are also Canadian 25c. mules that have the obverse of a medal that came out back in around 2000.

India also has mules,especially in the 2 Rupees of the 1990's.

Both Aussie & New Zealand also have mules in the traders' token issues,which do count,as these circulated as coins during the latter half of the 19th Century.

Australian mules

1977 50 cents - Obverse Australia 50 cents QE2 1977 and Reverse Australia 50 cents Coat of Arms 1976 or 1978 (the 1977 50 cents was the Silver Jubilee of Accession of Queen Elizabeth II, the 1976 and 78 50 cents featured the Coat of Arms of Australia), struck at Royal Australian Mint, around 4 are known.

1978 5 cents - Obverse Australia 5 cent QE2 1978 and Reverse Fiji 5 cent Drum, struck at Royal Australian Mint, at least 1 know.


1978 20 cents - Obverse Australia 20 cent QE2 1978 and Reverse Fiji 20 cent Tabua on a Braided Sennit Cord, struck at Royal Australian Mint, at least 1 know.

1988 5 cents - Obverse Cook Islands 5 cent QE2 1988 and Reverse Australia 5 cent Echidna, struck at Royal Australian Mint (RAM only struck 1988 Fiji 5 cent coins for the 1988 Mint Unc Sets), 1 known.

2000 1 dollar - Obverse Australia 10 cent QE2 2000 and Reverse Australia 1 dollar Mob of Kangaroos 2000, struck at Royal Australian Mint, thought to be less than 2,000.

2001 P (Silver 1 Ounce) 1 dollar/200 dollars Proof - Obverse Australia 200 dollars (of Platinium Koala) proof QE2 and Reverse Australia 1 OZ. 999 Silver (1 dollar) Proof Australian Kookaburra 2001, struck at the Perth Mint, possibly 20 exist.

2005 20 cents Proof - Obverse Australia 20 cent proof QE2 2005 and Reverse Australia 20 cent proof Platypus 2006, struck at Royal Australian Mint for the 2006 Proof Year Set, around 2 have surfaced to date, 1 is confirmed, other not. (The 2005 Proof Set had a 20 cents reverse which featured the 60th Anniv. of End of 2nd World War - Coming Home and the 2006 Proof 20 cents reverse featured the Platypus.)

2005 1 dollar Proof - Obverse Australia 1 dollar proof QE2 2005 and Reverse Australia 1 dollar proof Mob of Kangaroos 2006, struck at Royal Australian Mint for the 2006 Proof Year Set, around 26 known to date.. (The 2005 Proof set had a 1 dollar reverse which featured the 60th Anniv. of End of 2nd World War - Peace, the Dancing Man and the 2006 Proof 1 dollar reverse featured the Mob of Kangaroos.)

Other British Commonwealth mules include the Ascension 1978PM 1 Crown with the obverse of a 1 Crown medal-coin from the Isle of Man,some British West African 1d. mules dated 1936 & 1945.The 1945 has a 1936 King Edward VIII obverse.One of the 1936's has the obverse of an East African 1936 King Edward VIII 10c. coin.

There is also the Guernsey 1830 4 Doubles with the obverse of the St. Helena 1821 1/2d.

There was a Newfoundland silver 10c. coin of Queen Victoria that was muled with a Canadian reverse & a Newfoundland obverse.This unique coin was found in circulation thus it proved that it wasn't a pattern coin.

The 1992 Russian 10 Roubles also exists with the obverse of the 1991 Government Bank of the U.S.S.R. 10 Roubles.I have seen one of these.

A new one I just heard about this week for Australia. Just over 800 coins were struck by the Royal Australian Mint in 1998 and were released in individual cases, not in multicoin sets. It is part of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin Program.

Dated 2000 Proof Silver $5 Great White Shark and Coral.

Mintage for $5 Great White Shark & Coral was 67,309 (other packs) + 12,034 (card) = 79,343 (total).

The coin normally has the obverse with Raphael Maklouf design of Queen Elizabeth II. The mules have the Ian Rank-Broadley design which appeared on all Olympic coins from 1999.

There's even a mule in one of the Canadian silver $10 Olympic Games commemoratives of the 1970's.
