I've worked in a bank that had 10,000+ transactions a month and I currently work for a bank that if we have 5 people walk in the door all day we're lucky.

The more busy branches will be high stress and the very slow branches will cause you to try things like sticking a pen in your ear just to see how far it will go in.

My advice would be to find a bank somewhere in the middle - something that will keep you busy for most of the day but will allow a couple hours of down time.

There is no way I would work at a bank. The crap you have to deal with all day long is not worth the pittance of a wage that you would receive.

If I worked at a bank I would choose one without a coin counter machine so I didn't get stuck with roll hunters bringing in hoards of coins I'd get stuck with putting it all into the machine. Though if it was in the lobby that'd be ok though. Though if it was just someone dumping their change they collected for the past 60+ years I wouldn't mind helping with that.

But... I work in IT so even if I worked for a bank, I wouldn't be playing with the money...

An interesting thing about working in a bank is out of all the banks I've ever been in, I can't remember a teller lasting for more than a year or so. Officers at a desk a little longer but still does not appear to be a life time job.

I worked at a bank as a teller during college for business/finance work experience. Tellers get treated bad by customers for just following the rules. They do not get the respect or pay they should. Also after handling money all day tellers have a very small window of error they can make without getting into trouble. IMO it was a very stressful job for no more money than they make. The little time I worked at a bank taught me enough to realize that it wasn't cut out for me. I have the highest amount of respect for a bank tellers.

A relative of mine some years ago cashed in 20 gold bullion coins at their face value, because she correctly assessed their potential NUMISMATIC investment value as very poor. They were $200 face value, and at the time, had about $185 worth of gold in them. She did not reckon on the potential BULLION investment value.

Today, those coins have a bullion value just shy of $400 each.

Interestingly, she was working as a bank teller at the time she cashed her coins in and she was advising other customers to do the same.

Most don't understand how demanding a career in Finance and Banking can be. I have some old high school buddies that went into banking and they now look 10 years older that I do. Of course they argue that I just pickled myself with all that single malt.

I have worked in a bank for the last 20 years and enjoyed my job immensely. I made it known to the entire staff that I was an avid numismatist and would happily answer any questions about coins that customers had, the resulting referrals have yielded everything from "I have really rare/valuable old coins, what are they worth" (usually a SDB full of circulated common morgans) to "I have some coins I inherited, can you tell me what they are? (one time they were the nicest golden toned commemorative halves from the 30's and 40's I have ever seen, all in the original mailers from when they were issued.) Anytime an "interesting" coin comes in over the counter I get to see it and often get to buy it at the end of the day (if the teller that took it doesn't want it). Banking can be a great career but you have to advance past the teller position to be more than just a job.

I don't think I could do it. I see people give the tellers a hard time because their statement says they have 10 cents less than what they show in their check book, literally. Or the one time a lady came in and demanded her bounced check charges be dropped because it was not her fault that her husband forgot to make the deposit. And then there was the guy who came in and wanted to know why they would not cash his farm hands checks that he paid them with even though the checks were drawn on a different bank and the guys did not have accounts at that one. But it is closer to the farm and this guy banks there also. That is the kind of nonsense that would drive me insane, make me freak out on someone and get fired.

I would suspect that any position in a bank could be anywhere from fun to a real horror story. It could really depend on the location of a bank. For example in some of the areas in a large city where crime runs rampant, a teller's job could be really stressfull always wondering if a customer is there to rob the place. Then too in a heavily populated area you get masses amounts of all kinds of customers. Old ladies that just want their interest entered into a passbook, people with bags of coins that eat up time and create long lines. People in those long lines wanting to just get the heck out of there and lots and lots of other problems.
On the other hand I've been to banks in really small towns where the tellers know every customer by their first name. Each customer is greeted with a smile, questions on how the family is doing, is the party still on for Saturday, etc. Older people stopping in just to have someone to talk to also. Kids changing a quarter for pennies for their collections and no one caring about a possible long line since everyone in such a line is talking to each other. A candy dish and even coffee at a front table for free. The teller is dating your son or a neighbor so that too is something to discuss in line.
I imagine if all people and banks were like those, no one would ever complain about a banking job.

My wife is a teller/loan officer. I remember when I first started roll hunting. I went in and all four tellers had silver halves in their bins. I got 'em all! One of the girls related the time an old man turned in his Morgan dollars. Now, most banks are required to tell customers of value over face of rare coins. The old man didn't care, so she got those 20+ Morgans at face. My wife is a silver block and brings it home on occasion. My best find there was a solid roll of silver Walkers and Bens, it held a nice '38D Walker. Wifey also brought home a solid roll of steel wheaties! On occasion the tellers drawers count short or over, and no one leaves until the $ is accounted for, be it 1 cent or $100.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
Roll hunting since '77
Dirt fishing since '72
