Maybe I missed it but I just don't see the wear to make it 55. My guess would be AU-58 maybe MS

The second coin is obviously happier and more well-adjusted.

Looks MS to me and the color looks original. The hairlines don't indicate improper cleaning IMO but they do limit the grade. This dime looks strong for MS-62 and could make MS-63. An excellent example for type!

cartwheel
1. The pleasing effect seen on some coins when they are rotated in a good light source. The luster rotates around like the spokes of a wagon wheel. A term applied mainly to frosty Mint State coins, especially silver dollars, to describe their luster. Also, a slang term for a silver dollar.

I would also go with MS-62. Doesn't look cleaned to me.

62? really? I think its 55-58. There is just that slightly dulled look to the fields IMO. I'm also feelin a little bit of wear on the hair below Liberty and the leaf above Liberty. As well as a little wear on the rev. corn.

I'm going with my gut, almost, to call this one AU58 as opposed to Mint State. Agreeing with the OP, the fields are what make the difference for me.

The headband looks like it has minor wear, and the cheek looks like its experienced minor friction so thats why I said 55, but I didn't really look at the fields. However, I think 58 is more appropriate on second thought.

The following is my favorite description of it. Courtesy of BadThad:

"If it cartwheels, you'll see what kind of looks like spokes on a wheel moving around the coin. It's like a moving band of reflected light moving around the center of the coin. It sort of looks as if someone very tiny was standing in the middle of the coin with a flash light in each hand doing circles....best I can describe it."

Thanks guys for the grading opinions!

AU-58. The hair just below the band appears to have some slight wear. It is possible that it was a weak strike but it looks like wear to me. Nice coin!

I'm thinking 58 too. It doesn't look cleaned imo. Nice one!
