The part that I'm not getting is if they found it last year, why did they wait until Thursday to announce it? Did it take that long to get it checked out?

Probably due to English law. I could be wrong but the Government gets it all. I mean, it obviously belongs in a museum of course, but the 3 year old and dad get no money for it.
Someone please set me straight if I'm wrong.

yea I guess you guys are right ,

the kid could have had been the godchild the land owner or something.

i just jumped to conclusions , if this was in the usa it would be tied up in courts for years.

i wonder if the kid found a old gravesite or something

Much of this stuff was buried by the Romans only to come back later and retrieve it. They never came back or were killed in combat or forgot where they buried it. Good for us I guess :) This pendant has an obvious christian influence so I am wondering who may have dropped/buried it.

the video says they will split the money with the land owner and the Govt didn't get the money looked like it was at some type of auction house or something but the father said the money went into a trust for the kids

How I am understanding this story is

I think the land owners permission was asked to hunt the property, just as it is done here.
I have asked many land owners permission to metal detect their property.

With out going back and reading British treasure trove laws, it goes something like this

If you find something of historical value, you turn it into the government. They determine
if it is something they wish to put into a museum. If they (the British government) want it,
they are required to pay a fair market price, in this case to the finder and the land owner.

There is another part that goes something like, if found treasure at one time was owned by
the crown and was hidden, for example, from invading vikings .. then the government might
keep it. I don't think that applies here.

If they do not want it for a museum, then it is returned. And the parties involved would determine
how to sell the treasure.

that woman spokesperson may have been for a museum that I said looked like some sort of auction house because it didn't say but the way I understood her comments they have been paid for the item and the dad said they split it with the land owner (who does not want the area to be pin pointed where it was found) and the rest was put in a trust for the kids

There must be some crazy set of rules involved with metal detecting eh?

Unwritten rules? or are these clearly stated anywhere?

there are those that detect without the owners permission just as there are those that get permission and dig and leave tracks where they have been which in both cases usually means they will not be welcomed a next time. The unspoken Metal detecting rule is always ask permission and if you dig, plug the hole

Always know where you are and always ask. AND ALWAYS leave a place better than you found it, make sure the gates are closed if you found them closed.
Some areas of the country landowners are extremely sensitive to strangers of anykind on their property. I currently live in such an area... high crime and high vandalism has made landowners grumpy. Local treasure hunters hearabouts run craigs list ads offering landowners 50% of the take for permission to hunt.
True story: My dad would let anybody hunt his land if they would simply ask. Once he spotted a car load of "slickers" drive right by our house, right past the "posted" sign, right through an open gate into our lower pastures. Dad simply walked over and padlocked the gate shut... a few hours later some sheepish hunters came walking up to the house seeking permission to hunt... retroactively.

USA laws in general were founded on British laws.... but where British laws differ is ownership of what is below (and above) ground level. In USA, Unless the deed says otherwise (or sometimes, local zoning laws)... if it is on or under my land, it is mine... and sometimes or up to some height, what is over my land is mine as well (You can't locate a tram or a powerline over my property without paying... but you can fly your airplane... as long as you are a ways up there.

My suggestion is if you find something, just shut up! Don't tell anybody anything. All kind of jerks will come out of woodwork and create lots of headache.
