if they sell they have to split it with the field owner,
I dont know what to think , the child was tresspassing with his father
who owns it, the land owner or the finder ?
Clearly the field owner owned the location where it was found and could claim it was his and he would have eventually found it with his own dedector in the future.
But the kids father that found it could change his story and say oh no my mistake we found it in our own back yard

The story stated that "the locket was declared treasure trove at the inquest" and that the proceeds will be split between the finders and the land owner.
Don't know about set for life either.Taxes will probably get half, and a million bucks isn't all that much anymore.Now if the guy finding it was 60 or so years old, it might last a lifetime.

In previous cases such as this over here, its quite simply a 50 -50 split between landowner and finder. Though being declared treasure doesn't effect the ownership rights directly, selling it is subject to being offered, at the determined market value, to academic institutions first.

ah ha ,, I see in the usa it is very different and a team of lawyers could prob have the child and father arrested for tresspassing and thieft then give the pendant back to owner of the land

I am not sure where they came up with $4 million though. It is only 8 or 9 grams and 73% gold, so perhaps it is some kind of ultra-rare historical artifact?

land owner I think should get it all ,
The people were tresspassing on someone elses property.Digging holes in land that they didnt own.
the 4 million dollar price was becuase it is a 500 yr old midevel pendant , who knows might sell for even more at auction maybe less
How would you like it if someone came into your house took something from your attic that a previous owner left years ago then walked out side said we found a treasure! then said they would split it with you 50/50
Same difference it was the owners property and when a person buys property in agreement the paper work usually says something like " the land from point a to b including and structures attachments or objects included in the land sale unless other wise noted "
Atleast in the usa it does.
ARENT THERE LAWS IN ENGLAND TO STOP PROPLE FROM SCAVANGING YOUR PROPERTY FOR THINGS TO STEAL ?

The part that I'm not getting is if they found it last year, why did they wait until Thursday to announce it? Did it take that long to get it checked out?

Probably due to English law. I could be wrong but the Government gets it all. I mean, it obviously belongs in a museum of course, but the 3 year old and dad get no money for it.
Someone please set me straight if I'm wrong.

yea I guess you guys are right ,
the kid could have had been the godchild the land owner or something.
i just jumped to conclusions , if this was in the usa it would be tied up in courts for years.
i wonder if the kid found a old gravesite or something
