i am not going to pass up on what could be a great deal, even if there is no time to do research. why, because you can do research after words and the only repercussion is getting an unpaid mark on ebay, which wouldnt happen!why because it would have been determined a fake, other wise I would pay. unless Ralph doesn't help me next time.

I am happy for you that it worked out in your favor this time mantisfist.....really, I would hate to see anyone lose money like that. I think that it was established pretty early on page one that that the coin was a fake, and degenerated fairly quickly since then....so why this thread is now on page four is rather puzzling to me.....Is there virtue (or anything else to be learned) in continuing such an idiotic thread? Twenty seven "quality" posts on one thread has got to be a record....congrats on that (I guess). There is another pretty good coin forum site called Collectors Universe where many of the most prolific dealers around discuss things like ebay buying, selling and bidding practices....I'll bet that those folks would be very interested and impressed in hearing about a bid first, and decide later whether to pay or not strategy.

I would hate for anyone to purchase a fake either because that just gives them more reasons to keep making these things. That is why I said until you are more knowledgeable that if I were you I would stick with graded examples especially the rarer dates like this one. And even then you have to be careful because they have gotten pretty slick on counterfeiting the slabs also. I hate to tell someone not to buy from from someone that happens to live in 1 country or another but there is more of a chance if a rare date is coming from China that its fake and there needs to be some research done before ever bidding. I also said just because there are other bids on the item doesn't mean that its a good coin or even that its a good fake, it could be crude and still have allot of bids and the bidding be high because they have family members or themselves bidding on the item to make it look like there is fierce competition for the coin to make it look better and hopes someone will do just as what happened here, someone will bid and win in the last seconds of the auction without actually looking close or knowing what they are bidding on. Coins aren't the only thing coming from China that is fake though, so you have to watch everything you are buying from that country. I am not saying everyone in China is selling fakes, I am just saying if they are from China just be sure you know what an authentic item looks like before purchasing

to be fair, I did see the ebay auction, and what he did write in the title is "is this a fake? 1893-s Morgan dollar from ebay." he just edited it.
