I see the ads for these on TV and laugh every time I see one. I have to wonder who would actually buy these, but there must be a market or they wouldn't keep it up.

I would pay $2.25 each. They are kind of pretty.

The sad part is that lots of people do buy them thinking they are something special. Just yesterday my daughter asked me if I wanted to get some of those for my collection. Problem is big heart but no knowledge. And yes I did my best to explain to her that I appreciated the thought but they are not worth the money.

My nephew who is just starting to show interest in coin collecting caught that ad on TV and came to me very excited about the new two dollar bills that the mint was releasing this year!

I had to burst his bubble when I informed him that they would never be worth more then two dollars and that they are not a product released from the mint.

They are no more illegal than the gold plated qtrs. or the colorized coins....in other words, it isn't illegal at all for private companies to do this.
They just can't mislead the consumer to think that it's an original Mint product once they've "changed it" like that.
Sadly, this will sell to tens of thousands of people in the "NON-numismatic" community. If it looks "pretty" or "cool", they'll buy it. These folks are only on the fringe of the hobby, and if they continue with their education and knowledge in a positve direction within the hobby...eventually they'll realize their "error" in the purchase.
But those who remain on the fringe for life......well......they'll be up at 3:00 am buying these $2.00 bills and gold plated ATB qtrs. from HSN, keeping them and their ilk in business for a LOOOOOOOONNNNNG time to come.

I personally don't think they're that bad looking. A lot of people here say that they're worth no more than $2, but they clearly are. People are paying $10 for themright now making them worth about $10 imo... Will they hold value is a different story. Yes they are not a mint product, but neither are Disney Dollars. Look them up on ebay. There's a market for them (only know this because of my wife). They show up at coin shows (the Disney dollars) and sell for a pretty nice premium over there face value.

Lot of long time collectors here and if it's not silver/gold/mint coins they write it off as worthless. Kind of like paper money in general. I will agree that I doubt there will be a continued market for these, but don't let everyone discourage you from owning one if you think they're cool. It is your collection, so put what you want in it. Just realize that everyone is informing you they are not US Mint bills.

Now for everyone to share some knowledge with me - if they're not from the Mint how can it say this is Legal Tender on it?

They are legal tender.

The company bought real $2 bills and slapped a sticker on the bills.

Exactly ! It's only the "alteration" (or addition) that is not U.S. Mint. Like I said before.....the gold plated or colorized stuff is the same as this. They've "added" to a perfectly legal tender note.....and even after this "colorized" addition to the Note, it's STILL spendable and legal tender for $2.00.
It's only illegal to misrepresent it and say the this is a US Mint product with this "alteration". Because the Mint did not do this "Yellowstone" stuff to it......nor do they plate gold over State Qtrs......nor do they "colorize" ASE's and other coins.
Private companies do this perfectly legally and sell them to whoever they can get to buy them.

Well, maybe. You can take a coin and do just about anything you want to with it to damage, recolors etc and it is perfectly legal as long as you don't try and misrepresent it.

But paper money is held to a stricter standard. Altering, damaging or mutilating a piece of paper money in such a way that it is "unfit to be reissued", is illegal. If the government decided that adding those colored images to the note made it unfit to be reissued then it would be illegal.

Well how about for starters, the Mint doesn't make paper money, so none of th paper money in your pocket is from the mint but it is legal tender.

You know if I didn't have any morals or scruples, I could be be very rich and think up a racket like that. The other two lately are the three pc 9-11 10 year anniversary coin and that blasted gold proof buffalo.
Neither of which has a match head of gold and silver plating on them.

I think people figure it's been 10 years so now it's okay to make money off of 9/11? I know they've made and sold other stuff before too, just saying.

I saw the 9/11 thing for the first time yesterday. Isn't it funny how they say it's the purest struck gold coin ever in the U.S.? Or something very close to that because it's .9999 lol... and it's yours for $9.99!!
