The girls at my bank know I'm a collector, they help me out the best they can, they save up little stuff for me, they order me whatever I want as far as rolls go, and they do it all with a smile.
The truth has it's rewards.

If you always want to get a box a week (or more) it is best to talk to the head teller about ordering boxes for them to sell to you. They will appreciate it.
I was getting 2 boxes every Friday. And the head teller asked me if was going to be doing it all the time. Because if so she would keep extra boxes on hand for me. So it works out to a win-win situation.
Then I dump them at a different bank.

I know how you feel. I got attitude from a teller at Wachovia last week. I asked for rolls of halves and she cocked her head and said, "No we don't have any! Do you know how many of you guys come in eery day asking me?!" I was taken aback, so I said "No, I'm sorry, I don't know. How many?" She rolled her eyes and said, "Next!" She caught me on a bad day as normally I would have brushed her off.

woodywood: I order $100 per month from the same teller every time. The bank I use orders coins each Thursday. I call them @ 11am the first Thursday of each month, ask them to order $100 for me, and then pick them up the second Friday (8 days later). I have been doing this 8 months, and they are now trained to expect the call. I asked them if they would do it automatically each month for me, but I was told to call every month... So far, no inquiries as to what the cents are for!

Tell them you have a smelter at home and you melt them all down for the bulk metal. Then since it only looks like a lump of metal, you take it to the Federal Researve so they can use it to amke more coins. Or you tell them you melt them all down and pour the metal into molds to make toys for kids. Or you are an avid fishing nut and need lots of sinkers for your fishing equipment so you use coins. Or you use then in a Wild West show and shoot at them with guns like Annie Oakly did. Or you have a really big garden at home and your planting those coins to see if they grow into larger ones. There is really a lot of things you could tell them if they really ask. Most tellers really don't care what you do with your money unless you spend it on them.

I told the tellers at my banks that I go through the rolls with the kids trying to make a set. They seem to be fine with it. I do not dump at those banks though.
One thing that I found out is that it goes a long way when you make small talk.....abt the weather, kids or whatever. I live in the northeast so I can complain abt the weather all the time!

No Australian bank is interested in handing over hundreds of coins at a time to a customer, unless they feel that they (or you) have a good reason to do so.
They see it as just a waste of time for them, especially if they see a line of 20 customers waiting behind you.
Fortunately, there are no silver coins to be extracted from the circulating currency in Australia. The only scarce coins that may be taken from circulation are mainly in the 50 cent and dollar denominations, but they are common enough after recent release to not to have to go the the bank for them anyway.
I guess that may be the result of deliberate minting and issue policy.

I never have any trouble ordering anything from cents to the new Presidential dollars from my banks. I do follow the "dump them somewhere else" rule and at Christmas time, I take each of my 5 banks a couple loaves of pumpkin bread to thank them for their help all year. Yes, I know it's their job, but a little kindness goes a long way. Good luck with your searching.

Woodywood, be nice to the tellers, and they will be nice to you. If not use that bank as your dump, and go to another branch. Or tell them you are really really bad at poker. But being honest and saying you are a collector is probably the best route. And a big to the forum.

I agree with most posters. I tell my bank when the finally questioned me, "I have had an account here for 7 years do I need to justify why I want to withdrawl money in halves?" They usually frown upon it when you tell them your just huntign for silver or what not, but again it doens't matter its their job.

be honest. if they ask you, it is none of their business anyway. a teller asked me " did I find anything good in that box of coins I sold you last week?" before I could answer she said "sorry, its none of my business"
i have tried "lying" I feel bad. just be honest. it helps. once I told them what I really was doing and what I really looked for, they started saving me a TON!. but its a risk to tell a teller that you get silver and how much its worth. because then they will want it. but if you say "ill split it with ya, then they are more apt to save some for you as well because then you just helped THEM out too.. it works both ways not to be so greedy
