Some people collect "release rolls". Get them stamped and cancelled at the local PO and sell some on ebay. You can make a few buck this way. I paid for a trip to Springfield IL for the 2009 LP3 release doing this and had a good time.

I would definitely go. I packed the family up and drove almost 3 hours (the first hour in the pre-dawn darkness and in a driving rainstorm) to go to the second Lincoln Cent ceremony and would do it again in a heartbeat. Just a neat experience.

If you go, take time to go to the actual ceremony. When I went to the Lincoln ceremony, a lot of people just immediately got into line for coins. I went to the ceremony itself to see the guest speakers, a couple of choral performances, etc. Worthwhile - plus my two sons each got one of the new cents before anyone in line - thus, they can claim to have "gotten them first"!

There was still plenty of time to go through the line (I went twice actually) and we ended up with 30 rolls which was plenty enough for me.

I didn't wait in line for the postmark thing (it was probably another 3 hour wait) but might be worth it if you have time.

Bring exact change and purchase as many rolls as you are allowed!

I'd go in a heartbeat if it were 30 minutes away. Being the first one to get new, uncirculated rolls of anything is cool.
In my opinion, it'd be well worth a day's vacation.

I have attended release ceremonies in St Louis for the 2004 Peace Medal nickels and Springfield for the 2009 LP3 and 2010 Shield cents. All of the ceremonies had huge crowds of a few thousand people but there was also alot of money to be made on the Lincolns so some traveled hundreds of miles to attend. The 2011 Native American $1s should have a much smaller crowd but it would definitely be worth it to attend. Since it is in Plymouth, there will probably be alot of re-enactors in period dress and dignitaries present. As an example, the Peace Medal nickel ceremony had a keelboat landing on the riverfront, the Ambassadors of Spain and France, in addition to representatives from the major tribes that Lewis and Clark encountered.

The '11 Native American dollar launch has been postponed (again) to March 25. Read all about it:

http://www.wickedlocal.com/plymouth...merican-coin

I did attend the Franklin Pierce dollar launch last May. The majority of the audience was schoolchildren on field trips, as well as residents of Concord, NH. In addition to the individual coins and rolls, they were selling folders to accommodate a collection of Presidential dollars.

The ceremony itself was pretty cool, with brigadiers dressed in Revolutionary War-style clothes and played musical instruments from that era as well.

I was able to buy just one coin, but I had a good time. I want to buy one roll of '11 Native American dollars at this coming launch ceremony and get them stamped and cancelled on the day, as one said. I'll just have to find a nearby post office.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but I was wondering what getting a roll stamped and cancelled means and does for the roll?

It's just to keep as a first day of issue souvenir. People have done it in the past with things such as the relaunch of the $2 bill in 1976, for example. As it turns out, there was a limit of five coins per person, so I only bought that much.

First thing it does is bump the value way up. It does two things which leads to the first. It appeals to both coin collector AND stamp collectors. The value even gets higher if the stamp is also a first day of issue and postmarked, like on the 2009 Lincoln Penny rolls. It also provides proof that every single coin in that roll was an early release.

However, by the same token, the "First Day Coin Covers" that the Mint issued for each and every State Qtr. and Territory, has not seen much premium AT ALL.
These are "stamped and cancelled" first day issue....and it doesn't seem to matter much, even on "key date" ones in BU condition and sealed with both P&D mints.....

I assume they'll continue to do this for the ATB Qtrs., but I also assume that there will be no different result.
There's just no real "demand" or "interest" in them, I believe is the main problem.

So, bank rolls from the "ceremonies" may draw enough interest for buyers and collectors to put a premium, happily, on these.....but the F.D.C.C.'s are quite similar, and get NUTHIN' !........
Go figure.....
