You usually can't go wrong with a Dansco book, but I think they would lose to much value to bust a set open to put in a dansco. If anything you should just try to collect the best graded circulated coins you can find from rolls and put them in the Dansco. Then you can enjoy looking at the quarters without eliminating all value of your other set.

I've seen this dilemma pop up before. Some people will tell you not to remove them from the original mint casing, some people will say go for it. It comes down to what you want to do and what you want in the long run. I've seen much debate on the modern coin sets from the mint, claims that they won't be worth much down the road etc. I've seen discussion on the sets being worth more down the road in their original case, having never been removed. Personally I keep my silver proof Statehood Quarters in their original plastic, in a nice box that holds all 10. However, I've taken other sets, such as the Presidential dollars, opened them up and placed them into Danscos.

i wonder if Dansco or Whitman could be convinced to make an album that would hold those lenses that that would be a win win

I know one thing, as a buyer, I tend to lean toward buying Mint sets more so than individuals. It's that COA that helps. No COA = no sale on sets. Oh, the box helps too.

I wouldn't ever stick coins I plan to hold onto in a Dansco (or any) album. The coins have a tendency to tone (sometimes really ugly) in albums because the coins come in direct contact with the cardboard used to make the albums.

I personally use archival safe mylar flips for everything I plan to keep for any period of time. I have coins that have been in flips for 20 years and still look today exactly as they did the day I stuck them into the flip. I've had experiences with Danscos, especially with silver, where the coins started to change colors less than six months in the album.

Coppercoins do you just staple your flips or do you add tape to the seams as well?

but on the same token I don't want to depreciate their value as proof sets by removing them from lenses without researching

The answer is really simple. Since you sound worried about value, leave them the way they are. People that want to buy complete sets would like that. However, this is just based on what are you plans for your coins? If your collecting for an investment, that is one thing. If your a coin collector and want to view your coins easily, put them all in Albums.
I never sell coins so I really don't care about keeping proof or uncirculated sets together. Almost all my coins go into Albums. I've had coins in Albums for as long as there have been Albums. Never a problem of any toning, tarnishing, corroding, staining or nothing. Coins I've put in some Albums have been there so long I'm suprized there aren't cob webs by them. Again, since I really have no iterest in selling any coins, don't care about who gets all these in the future, I do with them as I like. And I like to see them all in Albums.
All my Albums are in Zip Lock Plastic Bagx. I usually put them in, push out as much air as possible, fold over any excess and that is that. No problems at all.
Hate to bring up this topic again but I use Whitman Albums mostly. Due to almost all I use are free, I do have many Dansco ones too.
And yes, for those Dansco people, I think they are bettter construced.

Yotie - Neither at the moment but I am considering a heat sealer to seal the pocket containing the coin.

For the record - I would NEVER stick a stapler anywhere near a coin. I used to, but have experienced and seen too many horror stories.

I used to use staples on 2x2's. Then one day I put a 1921S Lincoln Cent, MS 65+ in a 2x2 until I could find time to put in an Album. When I went to remove it, I used a screwdriver to pry out the staples. It slipped and ran accross Lincoln's face.
NEVER AGAIN WITH STAPLES.

Agree with most - if you are "investing" in these coins and think you will ever sell them in the future - keep them in the OGP.

However, I put together a Statehood Quarter P, D, S, S, set in the two volume Dansco that I will pass down to my sons and let me say - it is the MOST impressive album that I have. 100 quarters in each book is just gorgeous.

I use the archival sleeves for my Danscos but haven't been collecting long enough to even know if toning is a problem. I just like the way they look in the albums.

deborjd - watch the silver coins for any hint of toning and do yourself a favor to remove them if they start to turn at all. I have seen silver coins go black in Dansco albums.

Yikes! Black? Thanks for the heads-up and I will keep an eye on them. Pretty easy...since I like looking at them!

Just Carl summed it up very well.

If you are a collector, do not worry about value. Do whatever will make you happy! They are your coins.

I have been using albums for over 26 years. I have never had a problem with them.

How and where you store them is very important. I have seen some nasty toning on OGP housed proof sets as well (even those from the 70's and 80's where tampering would be more evident). They are not air tight.

But do not take my word for it. I have nothing to gain by your choices. My coins are my coins and I want to view them the way I want to view them!
