OK, if this is proof, a pr67rd is a $24 coin, up to $75 for a deep cameo.
I can see not wanting to bother retailing them at a buck fifty, especially if you have rolls of them from breaking silver proof sets, but that sure makes for expensive change.

Might be an impared proof....it could be his pictures, but the fields don't look mirrored enough. The proofs from 61 had highly refective fields and these are dulled.

I have to agree with BadThad I do not think his coin is a proof but, rather, a very high grade business strike

It looks like a proof to me. Either way, the dealer threw you a bone! NICE!

I get too dizzy to concentrate when the grades get up that high.

I would guess that this is a candidate to get slabbed, maybe?

no, its not valuable enough, I would say if it were a $150+ coin it would.
this is a $15 coin at most.

Slab-worthy or not, it's a beautiful example - thanks for posting it for us to admire!

Some chance this is an MS-67 or MS-68 business strike of a 1961-P. If so, enormously valuable coin particularly if you keep it for the long haul. I don't have the specs for that date but I believe few are known in that grade I can't find any price history above 66 on NGC.

This is a proof coin, it's obvious from the photos. Proofs and business strikes look totally different from one another.
When proof dies get near the end of their life cycle, they start to show flow lines. It is very common.
This coin has no cameo, and has a little haze here and there. In fact, it is a very typical 1961 proof cent as I see at shows for sale between $1 and $5 all the time. I personally wouldn't spend over a $5 bill on it...but that's just me.

Yeah you are probably right those rims do look pretty square. Found a picture of the highest graded (MS-67) NGC example. Looks like they have just graded 1:
