I agree the price guide for an evolving market coins like these pucks is useless. It may have some value in a few years once the dust settles and a true price evolves. As far as reality ( ebay) there have actually been very few graded single coins put out there at auction. There have been many BIN's at stupid prices that have no chance of selling but true auctions are few and far between considering the number of sets out there. Eliminating the 69pl/DM's these are the most recent sales: PCGS MS68PL (Mt.H) $325 (4/6) PCGS MS68 (GC) $328 (4/6) NGC MS68 (Mt.H) $335 (4/4) PCGS MS69 (Yos) $550 (4/3) Average selling price for a raw set $1350 which is $270/coin So, yes, RIGHT NOW it is not cost effective to get a set graded unless you can cherrypick well and submit only the best coins...

Prices bottomed about a week ago and have started to reverse upward. The only ones still trending downward are the PCGS PL/DM's since they reversed their grading stance and made PL a standard and DM a close second. Their PL/DM designated coins now make up around 90% of coins graded which has taken the prices down dramatically....

It's the ER or Early Release designation on these short strike coins that is meaningless if they were all struck within a month or two weeks of each other. I originally understood this term to refer to product that was struck early in the year off of fresh dies as opposed to later when the dies might have worn off a bit. For these short strikes did the mint make public to the APs as to which date their shipment was struck? The ER label on these coins only makes sense if they could be verified as coming from the FIRST day of striking, which I have heard nothing about.

I agree that Early Release AND First Strike are pointless with the pucks since the way they were released prevented knowing which coins were struck when.
My amazement with FS is that since ALL of the pucks are eligible how can it be of any value? Yes, it says "I paid $18 more to get 2 words on my slab." That's $90/set for what?
FS/ER kinda makes sense with regular, time restricted issues...but when ALL are "special" none are..

Early Release and First Strike have nothing to do with when the coins are struck and everything to do with when they arrive at the TPG.

ok so my new question: Do you have to choose a certain way to be graded to get the PL/DM's. I don't submit coins often, but I don't know how to tell and be sure.

No. Just submit them and if they're PL or DMPL, they'll get slabbed that way. I sold a couple DMPLs on ebay for close to $1,000 each last month. It was worth the $40 grading cost for sure. Right now the grades that bring real premiums are 68DMPL and anything graded 69 of 69PL with 69DMPL still bringing the largest premiums because it's the highest reported grade..

How can I as a "novice" grader tell if a coin would be PL or DMPL?

The reflectivity of the surfaces. Without looking up the exact numbers, PL needs 4" of reflectivity on both surfaces so that you could read newsprint in the reflection. DMPL requires at least 8". Don't quote me on the 4" and 8" figures but you get the idea. As far as actually reading the newspaper? Well, it should be clearly visible. Here was an auction I had running on an MS68DMPL to give you an idea: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...270729161155

Quote: which to me makes me think the $30-40 per coin graded won't really much matter unless they hit a 69. Any thoughts?
Welcome to the crap game TPG. Ladies and gentleman, lay down $40 and we spin the wheel, if it stops on 69, you win $200. Anything lower, and you lose the $40. Do you realize the average PCGS slobbed coin is worth roughly $1000? Anyone paying to slob a $100 coin is doing it in the hopes of an unjustified high grade. Authentication is useful, but you wouldn't pay $40,000 a year to insure a $100,000 home, would you? Would you pay $40,000 for a good chance to get a guaranteed appraisal of a million dollars for the same home? You betcha! It's the adult version of being able to fill a garbage bag with brand new baseball cards at any card show, because kids buy packs on the gamble of getting a $100 special card, and they literally throw the rest of them away.

Keep in mind that it could take MONTHS to get the coins graded. You know what the market is today, but what will it be in June? Not to mention that you can turn them now and buy more, lather rinse repeat, or buy silver with today's profits, all while waiting for a TPG to get your coins back to you.

17 day turn-around time at PCGS. Most of my submissions have been faster - Last one took 10 days. It's been very profitable.

I think its useful to send out any raw classic coin purchased on ebay exceeding vf grade and of more than $200 value to be certified simply for the counterfiet detection scenario. If your going purely for authentication, id recommend ANACS or perhaps ICG as they're the cheapest reliable services on the market. The number of raw fakes on the market is alarming, and certification can save you money in the long run by catching the fakes sooner than later. As for grading bullion I agree that it is pointless to send out coins for grading unless you cherry pick them yourself, bulk submissions will generally be unprofitable.
