Very nice examples, I think the toning is exceptional. I would love to own coins as beautiful, congratulations on a nice buy.

Nice pick for the price. Something was done to it.

the OP's coin looks like it was polished before it was toned

Nice coins mshev!

Are you guys saying it was done by hand and not natural? If so that's ok too, but how do you get that look?

Thanks for the replies! :)

It was polished years ago and then it retoned from that. It could have sat in an album somewhere or in a roll where over time, the edges began to retone.

I was hoping more people would post their Morgans as well!

mkoenig - While plenty of coins are toned artificially (by any of numerous means) which hurts the value instead of enhancing - that's not what they are referring to with yours. Yours seems to be naturally toned, but prior to the toning, it was likely polished. That's why, despite the wear on the coin, it still seems to be pretty shiny. Natural luster on a Morgan has a cartwheel look to it, but starts to wear off as a coin is in circulation.

I'm not much into toned Morgans, but I've seen some very nice looking ones. Since I don't have one single favorite here is one.

Here's an interesting 1878 7/8 7/5 VAM 38 I jumped on and couldn't resist.

Interesting story on this 78 S, I saw it also advertised as a VAM 12, not that it mattered to me, I thought it had an attraction to it. When it arrived, I was looking at the attribution points for VAM 12 and surprised myself saying this is not a 12 but a VAM 6 DDO 'RIB', Hot 50.

You have to understand, as hard as I try its very difficult with my small amount of knowledge and experience to have done that. In any event, I had a friend send it in for attribution and reslabbing and low and behold I was right. Made me a proud papa.

Southsav - Awesome coins! I want to pick up a 7/8 at some point. I think it's great how it captures the shift between the two tail designs - within one coin. How'd that second one end up grading? I'm not too knowledgeable on VAMs unfortunately, though I'm trying to learn as I come across Morgans with clear doubling.

mshev:

I was very happy with the MS 64 given by NGC for the 78S.

I too consider a work in progress learning just a small part to this world of numismatics. Thanks to all the CCF members who have also been there, done that, etc, and are willing to share with us. They sure put up with some stupid questions, and I don't mean that in a mean way. It is easy for someone to just pop in here and ask, "what is this coin", when you have the worldwide web at your fingertips. Researching, reading and doing more research and reading is all part of this hobby, love and fun.

Best of luck in your future searches and acquisitions.
