Quote: Can anyone tell me how coins this old get into rolls? Very simple, machines don't check dates. When some steals a coin collection and dumps it in a Coinstar, the machine doesn't ask for ID, fingerprints, or any of that other nosy stuff coin dealers seem to want. It's worth 10% to get easier-to-spend folding money, especially late at night when the coin dealers are closed. One thing's for certain, that coin hasn't been used in commerce for over a century, it was in a collection for a substantial period.

You are overlooking something - I believe... In San Diego I also use a Coinstar machine. (they subtract 9.2% or 9.8%) depending whether I use Stater Brothers or Vons. BUT the total you see that is due you when your coins have all gone through - allready has the fee (9.8%) subtracted from what originally went through the machine.
Check your receipt closely - you should find the same to be true!
If not - guess I'll have to find a Ralphs in San Diego...

Why don't you put in $1 worth of coins and see what the screen says.

I can confirm that it takes their percentage out as they go....The total at the end of the counting cycle is with the 9% already taken out.

Most likely someone cashed in a collection of old silver for face. It happens all the time.
Even bank tellers tend not to realize those old coins have value.

Funny you should post this now. I just finished going through a $100 box of nickels and I also found a 1899 "V" Nickel. It was just sitting on the top of the roll so I could plainly see it. I also found one silver and a buffalo in the same box. I'll post later with pics.

I've never found a Buffalo nickel in a roll or in circulation, let alone a Liberty nickel. Some folks have all the luck. But I did get an 1895 Indian Head cent in my spare change last September at McDonalds. It's not in very good shape.
