the 1882 penny mentioned earlier, does that rarity carry across to the half penny? also what are the key rare dates for half pennies anyone know?

The close up helps. Looking again at the overall shape of the 3 on the close up it looks more like a standard 1863. Maybe the bottom upward curve of the numeral three on your coin has not been struck properly, maybe the die was blocked or damaged, giving it the apperance of being open? As rlc mentioned, the downward 'spike' from the top bar is not quite right.

Thanks marz, I agree with your blocked die/or damaged theory. Here's another for you guys and gals to peruse. Does that look like a raised dot between the last two 9s? Cheers, Steve

Hi ashb123,
I can't answer the first part of your question, though I'm fairly sure one of the key dates for Victorian halfpenny's is the 1871. I also have a 1865/3 which I understand is fairly good.
Sorry I can't be more help :(

Hi Ash there are not any really significant rarietes in half pennies, except one bun head, date : 1862, if they have A, B or C to the left of the lighthouse, and I think they need to be in VG condition to fetch around £150.00 really depends on the condition. C to the left of lighthouse is the most valued at 2000+? But headed under unc. The 1882 half penny merits no premium to its Penny counterpart.

Looks like a raised dot to me Steve. I have one of those on a 1917 penny, but to the left of the date. I call it 'Pimple' :)

Keep searching Tracy-you never know your luck.
I've looked at 1,500 2p's over the last couple of weeks, suprised to see only 5 1976 and just 4 old design 2008.

Hi all,
Found an 1861 Vicky penny today with what seems to be another 1 under the second 1 in date. Can't find any info on this, is it a known variety? btw-can't post a pic just yet as my cams not working-will post pic asap.
Cheers, Steve

I had the chance to purchase two EF/AU 1951 George VI pennies from a coin dealer friend in Illinois this past weekend. He was selling them for $65 a piece. However, I got sidetracked with a few other goodies and didn't make the buy.

For $65 you should get BU. There are always loads on the bay and coin fairs.

You are spot on, peter1234. I think that is why I got sidetracked to some other nicer coins. The 51s just did not hold my attention at that price.
