If you were a 'big name' dealer, they would have been nicer to ya'!
Nice coins, anyway. Luckily, we don't need PCGS to be able to enjoy our stuff.

No doubt pcgs is "kindler and gentler" to the big boys. I really think the 16 Merc looks it could be in a holder with 64 fsb. Nice group of coins.

I did about as well the first time I sent coins to a Third Party Grading Service. Very nice coins. I really like the 1853 Quarter.

I must say that the only problem I see with 1916 Merc is the small rim ding at the 4 o'clock position on the obverse. The 1899 and 1900 Morgans I tend to agree with PCGS. Personally I am put off by the color of the Bust Half. If I was to see that coin in hand I may form a different opinion, but that is just my thoughts.

That's exactly what and why the TPGs turn me off.

Regardless if they have been cleaned I think they should be graded and noted "cleaned" or something. Really just wastes our money sending them in

I think they're all nice coins and I hope you enjoy the collection. I'd like to see a rationale from PCGS rather than just "questionable colour", but I think we all know that isn't going to happen. I now feel less confident buying raw coins...

I'm very confident in the colors of the two later date Morgans - those are colors I've only seen on naturally toned coins (the coloring isn't reflected perfectly in the photos - it goes from a peacock green into a nice light rose color). The toning does not just have a surface look, and contains the 'shadow-effect' that is supposedly only present in naturally toned coins (though the absense of it does not mean toning is not natural). Not to mention - I bought them from a dealer I trust, who was the one to pop them out of an old album.
What I'm not confident in is PCGS and their money-wasting over-caution - I'm going to either try resubmitting one of them, or give NGC a shot with them.

My immediate reaction to the first Morgan was that toned over a long period of time. 3rd, 4th Morgan--why would that be intentional/questionable/AT?  Perhaps I need an expert's eye? Edited by DVCollector

I have never heard of Questionable color, but as far as cleaned I would think they should still grade it & mark it as such.

I have never seen an explanation for the phenomenon but I strongly suspect it has something to do die flow lines and their interaction with the slow kinetics of a natural toning reaction. I have owned a couple Morgans with a very similar toning scheme, both were in NGC slabs so obviously NGC did not have a problem with the toning. It baffles me that a grader employed by PCGS, someone who should be considerably more experienced than myself, fails to recognize one of the simplest diagnostics of natural toning |

Another fine example of TPG toning rejection. The 1899 and 1900 are definately NT market acceptable. PCGS is extremely paranoid about their reputation the past few years so they ALWAYS error on the side of "questionable color" if there's the slightest doubt. They're color-cooky, but they're a big shaper of public opinion. As a matter of fact, that's the only thing they're really good at. FWIW...

 To the club. PCGS #1 now on my "you know what" list. Bad economy = lets take their money and send them back nothing. Any coin that is naturally toned or looks great that is dated 1940 or earlier is now officially cleaned, damaged or off color. Hey, not blaming the guys in the trenches at pcgs or ngc they work hard and are just doing what the bosses tell them to do. My opinion, if you are a serious collector and not a dealer or reseller etc.) buy the coin not the slab. |

Almost forgot. Your 16 merc. What the .... That is a beauty. FSB + etc. Yeah, maybe in 1917 it accidently fell into a bucket of water or a glass of sarsparilla. Betcha if it had a "D" on the rev. the tune would change real quick. PCGS Don't get me started  |
